We had the privilege of joining the
@mountainstoseatrail Gathering of Friends last month! We saw how deeply interconnected trail stewardship, conservation, and community care really are.
You might know the Friends of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail for their trail work days, but they do far more than just trail maintenance! Their work spans advocacy, conservation planning, accessibility, fundraising, education, mapmaking, trail land acquisition, and volunteer coordination across the state.
What stood out most was the dedication of the volunteers. Volunteers contributed over 41,000 hours in 2025 alone, not only rebuilding trails but also supporting surrounding communities affected by storms. Again and again, we heard stories about how caring for the trail also created friendship, purpose, and belonging.
Through stories shared by volunteers and recovery teams, we learned how widespread and collaborative the response to Hurricane Helene has been. Organizations like NC State Parks, Carolina Mountain Club, Wild South, MountainTrue, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and many others are working together on everything from trail restoration to habitat protection and invasive species management. Even after such devastation, speakers described Hurricane Helene as an event that strengthened partnerships and communication across organizations.
The conference highlighted how environmental stewardship is never the work of one group alone; it depends on collaboration between nonprofits, government agencies, businesses, volunteers, and local communities. More than anything, we left with a stronger understanding that caring for the land is also a way of caring for people, and that meaningful action, no matter how small, creates lasting impact for both the environment and the communities connected to it.
