Last year, I was commissioned by the @opwestfriars to illustrate and animate a series of five short films for their upcoming documentary on the âcooperator brothersâ: Dominican brothers who, for one reason or another, chose not to pursue the priesthood.
This is the first of the five. The second film is nearly locked, and another is currently in production.
This series has been one of the most challenging and fulfilling projects Iâve had the chance to work on. The creative freedom the Dominicans have given me in shaping each of these shorts has been an invaluable opportunity to emulate the work that first inspired me to pursue film production and animation and to push my abilities further than ever.
Iâm excited to continue sharing more about the films and the important stories they tell in the coming months!

Excited to be working on a short film set in the medieval period, in no small part because I get to justify studying Eyvind Earle landscapes all day

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a . . . motion designer.
Well, sort of.
I wanted to make films, that was for sure. And write books. And draw four-panel comic strips. I even became a "professional" ballet dancer for two summers. In short, I wanted to tell stories, in whatever medium was available.
For the past decade, I've been fortunate to work in both film production and motion design, and over the years found myself becoming more and more attracted to the latter. It's a field that demands you wear many hats (often simultaneously): director, editor, cinematographer, animator, screenwriter, choreographer, set designer, music director . . . the list goes on. And for my money, it doesn't get more exciting than that.
After working for two years exclusively in motion design, my wife and I decided we would try and take the inventible next step: fulltime freelance.
This past April, after a good deal of discernment and anxiety, and with the support of trusted friends, we took the plunge and I submitted my notice at my 9-5 job.
It's been a wild ride, as my wife can attest, and one I couldn't have jumped on without her loving support and creative instincts. The last few months have had their challenges, but they've been more creatively fulfilling than I could have imagined.
