hi instagram 3 years ago today '3', a collection of auditory sketches and rough sound ideas that i felt worked well together was uploaded to the internet. these all came from the same place in my heart: a desire to approach creating music in a way that i had never tried before. to disregard all prior concepts i had of things that were "musical" or "listenable" and use the available tools inside my apartment bedroom to mold sounds in a way that not only challenged my process of creation but that i believed captured the tumultuous emotions i was experiencing at the time. in the last 3 years i have morphed into a new personas with experiences and knowledge that left me feeling very disconnected from the person who made 3, but still believed in the crudely recorded audio that was left behind. i did not one to fully abandon 3 as i moved forward, but i felt if i were to continue to share it, i should alter it to feel true to who i am today. so as of this morning, a revised snapshot of these sound ideas is available to listen to on the internet. these still maintain the same approach of experimenting with ways of creating sound that were foreign to me, but the result feels closer to who i am today. it will not be on spotify as i no longer wish to support that company in any way shape or form. attached are some recent doodles and some photographs from around the time 3 was originally created. many of these were taken by @lukasneedham who provided the photos that were used to make both the original and current album art for 3. i hope some of you may resonate with these sound ideas and if anything, it inspires someone out there to express yourself creatively like no one is watching. much lov - joe

"i won't let this happen to my children" song is 'i will' by radiohead performed by me footage sourced from internet archive i don't know who the people in this video are. i don't know their stories or even the location of where this was filmed. i don't know when this was filmed. the footage didn't have any sound or captions when i found it. but the people in this video stir up some sort of pit in my stomach that makes me feel like sharing the fragments of their stories i stumbled upon could help them some how. their struggles were immortalized in motion and then left in a digital filing cabinet. i'm having a really hard time wrapping my head around that. we live in such an absurd world. be kind to each other, ok? ~ joe

twin falls - built to spill so grateful i had the chance to see @builttospill play their album "there's nothing wrong with love" last night all the way through. i really latched onto that album the summer after i graduated high school and i could talk forever about how much that album has inspired me to make my own music blah blah blah blah but who cares. i'd rather just share the stuff it inspired me to make. this is a cover of twin falls, one of my favorite songs off that album, that i recorded super quickly today while i was still feeling all the energy from the concert last night. the footage is taken from a short film/home movie called "saga of the happy wanderers" that i found on internet archive. it's about a family's road trip in the summer of 1953. i felt like it the footage really captured the feeling of nostalgia that this song radiates to me. but yeah built to spill rocks go listen to them if you don't already. you're missing out.
