My former cello teacher is retiring and a bunch of his former students came to celebrate his amazing career. Congratulations Brent Wissick! Class of 1986 to his current class were represented today. What a beautiful symphony of sound in this room.
Mid January this guy (@gnarlyczar ) took me out on my first back country tour and though the conditions weren’t great, good times and character building was accomplished.
Due to the lack of snow coverage, the way down was an absolute wretched decent that felt more like bush whacking than it did skiing. At one point I had to take my skis off and go down the mountain in waist deep drifts in my boots. All in all it was not the best back country experience but any time spent with Eli is always an adventure and makes for good stories after I’ve forgotten how scared and exhausted I was.
Thank you to @nordicaski@rhone and @thule for keeping me safe and outfitted.
Oh and yes we saw two moose.
Special session on January 15th. Guest host, @joekwon80 will be presenting one of his favorite Fiona Apple albums right here at B-Side.
Joe Kwon, of The Avett Brothers hosts an intimate journey through Fiona Apple's The Idler Wheel... - her masterwork of emotional excavation and sonic architecture. Hear this album through the ears of a string virtuoso. Experience it through our tubes and TAD speakers.
One night. One album. One storyteller guiding us through another's vision.

Happy belated birthday trip for @emilymeineke . Emily has always wanted to go to Hawaii and since I have so many miles we decided to take a quick trip out to Maui and visit Hana and Kapalua. I knew things were above Emily’s expectations when she said she wanted to make this a yearly thing for us. We enjoyed unplugging for a week and just letting Se Hwa lead the wanders. If you haven’t been to Hana I highly recommend the trip out. The road is windy and sketchy at times but the pay off was worth it. Thank you to Hubert and Marlene @hanamauiresort for taking the best care of us!
1) Se Hwa is clearly my child.
2) Se Hwa really enjoyed all the delicious fruit she came across. Parking lot fruit and musubi lunches were pretty great.
3) Emily and Se Hwa watch the surfers catching some waves.
4&5) one of my favorite things about waking up early and letting Em sleep is was Se Hwa and my “wanders.” Se Hwa loved just seeing all the vegetation and flowers and picking up seeds to give to her imaginary forest sprite friend Totoro.
6) Se Hwa enjoying a fresh coconut off a street side vendor as we left Kapalua for Hana.
7) Se Hwa and Em walking over to Auntie Carissa and Uncle Big Bird’s cottage for sunrise fruit and coffee.
8) Se Hwa looking at the sunrise.
9) Beach side naps are the best naps.
10) Carissa @carissamondavi and uncle Big Bird @winofredrik (the godparents) take Se Hwa for a dip at Hamoa Beach.
I have been seeing a bunch of clips from SEMA and it’s got me excited to think of the next piece of gear the truck will get. It’s also my favorite time of year when I start converting the truck from an overlander to a snow truck for our trips up to Tahoe for ski season. I can’t wait to see what this season brings for my little toddler.
I love the way these @blackrhinowheels look on the truck with these beefier tires. Most likely this will be the last season on these tires considering they drove across the country and have seen a bunch of miles on not so great roads. I’ll be looking for a good mud/snow tire for next season. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
For those of you interested in car stuff these are the Voltaic wheels from Black Rhino.
Making some congee to take over to some friend’s house tonight. I love this dish so much and have made vegan versions before, but this chicken congee is the original and to die for. All the right umami and funk to the broth makes for a delicious final product. I’ll post a photo of one of the assembled dishes, if I think about it, in my stories.
The cast iron pot is a @vermicular_global 26cm oven pot - 2.0 in beautiful Matte Himalayan Pink. This pot stays on our stove because it’s too pretty to put away.
Love this shot Emily got of Se Hwa and me walking to the bus. As much as I love performing and being on stage I am very ready to be home and hunker down for the winter months, get some good turns in with Se Hwa, and learn a bunch of new techniques and recipes.
That being said the touring season isn’t QUITE over yet! See you @mooncrushlive in a week!
Happy #nationaldaughtersday to my @kwon.sehwa
I love this shot of @emilymeineke and Se Hwa walking into Red Rocks this past July. It really looks like Se Hwa knows exactly where she’s going and is just allowing all of us to come along for the ride.
