I want to take a minute to recognize the passing of a Louisiana music legend, Buddy Flett.
Buddy was from northern Louisiana, specifically Shreveport, LA. Buddy and I knew each other, but we were more acquaintances than friends. I never played in a band with him, but I knew his music and his importance to the Louisiana blues music scene. More importantly, he was a close friend, a mentor and a primary inspiration to the two guitarists I collaborate with most frequently today, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Papa Mali.
Buddy passed yesterday, May 11th at the age of 73. Buddy and his music will be missed by many.

That’s me on the bench with Allen Toussaint at Ralph’s on the Park. He wrote two of the songs on Qualified, “Fortune Teller” and “Last Train.” Allen was the hit maker of New Orleans in the 60s, writing and producing for just about everyone in town.
“Fortune Teller” came out in 1962, sung by Benny Spellman on Minit Records with Allen producing. He credited the writing to Naomi Neville, his mother’s name and his songwriting pseudonym at the time. The Rolling Stones, The Who, and The Hollies all covered it in the 60s.
“Last Train” is the closer of Allen’s 1975 Southern Nights, the same album that gave us the title song Glen Campbell later turned into a country #1. Slow and soulful, with the piano carrying it. A deep cut from a record full of them.
On Qualified, Cyril Neville sings “Fortune Teller.” Eight covers, three originals, Papa Mali on vocals throughout.

Today’s “At the airport photo” is a happy one. I left New Orleans on April 9th. I played 22 shows in 22 cities with the Kenny Wayne Shepherd band and in the middle of it, I flew back to New Orleans on April 27th for one night to perform at the WWOZ piano night.
We started in Destin FL, made our way thru Florida and then headed up thru the Midwest and finished in St. Louis. Just saying it makes me feel weary!!
We had a really great tour. Great music and great crowds, but I’m ready to get home.
I’ve got a bunch of gigs in New Orleans this weeks so if you’re in town, I’ll see you there. Stay tuned.
