• A S T O R Y O F H O M E • Meet Joyce and her baby girl Beni. . This temporary artwork is installed on Mallow Castle. The drawing covers almost the entire facade of the central tower and partly flows into the projecting bays to the right and to the left. . The project entitled ‘A Story of Home’ is a powerful statement about the pursuit of a home. Through a series of collaborative workshops over the past three months with 35 migrant women from Cork city and county, we explored their understanding and experience of home. This resulted in two large-scale drawings being installed, the first on Sullivan’s Quay in Cork City and this the second, on Mallow Castle. . Home is often transient for these Cork migrant women. Home is a memory of the past but also a dream for their future. I believe everyone deserves to be cherished in the safety and permanence of a home. . ‘A Story of Home’ is a collaborative project with @theglucksman @corkmigrantcentre and @corkmidsummer The project was funded by @artscouncilireland and supported by @corkcountycouncil and @corkcitycouncil IMAGE DESCRIPTION: A black and white photograph shows the central three-storey tower and hedge-lined raised gardens of Mallow Castle. A dual portrait of a mother and her sleeping baby is affixed to the limestone surface of the castle walls. The woman looks directly at us, as she smiles. Her baby is held tightly on her back in a patterned blanket called a ‘dipupila’ and is secured with a large knot to the front. #streetart #illustration #mallow #mallowcastle #cork #drawing #blackandwhite

Can you believe it’s been 6 months since #HTN25 !!! Luckily that means it’s only 6 months till #HTN26 😏 ‘Minding Your Whisht’ by @joecaslin from last years festival on Dunbar Link is starting to deteriorate on schedule, but here’s some images of it in all it’s glory last May😍 Here’s what Joe had to say about the piece: “‘Minding your whisht’ means more than simply staying quiet - it’s a call to take responsibility for your words, and understand when those words are needed, and when they aren’t. The artwork is inspired by gothic cathedrals, where saints and prophets are immortalised in towering ornate columns. The sacred is not far off or unreachable, it is all around us, and can often be found unexpectedly - right beside you or even across a divide.” 📸: @streetartatlas

• M I N D Y O U R W H I S H T • This artwork was inspired by the poem ‘Mind Your Whisht’ by @seanwatmorepoetry We often look to distant figures; influencers, religious leaders, and politicians for guidance, yet the real pillars in our lives and our communities are usually much closer to home. Both of our grandads used the same expression: ‘mind your whisht’. They were men we deeply admired, and their words carried weight. ‘Minding your whisht’ means more than simply staying quiet - it’s a call to take responsibility for your words, and understand when those words are needed, and when they aren’t. • T H E H I P P O C A M P U S • This pencil drawing centres on the hippocampus, an ancient and imaginative creature deeply rooted in Belfast’s history, first appearing on Belfast city’s coat of arms in the 17th century. The hippocampus serves as both a tribute to the city’s rich cultural heritage and a symbolic representation of learning and memory, inspired by the human brain’s hippocampus region. Cradled by a pair of hands, it embodies the nurturing and mentorship provided by the staff of the Belfast School of Art, celebrating the students whose creativity and growth have defined its 175-year history. @belfastschoolofart @bsoa_illustration

• T H E R I S I N G 2 0 2 4 • Yesterday, Niall Breslin @bressie and his team - Al, Dee, Kipper, Joe, Ray, John, Paul, Colin, Ian & Shane completed their first day of a six-day kayak down the River Shannon. Following this they will cycle 160km from Limerick to Killarney and finally, they will climb Carrauntoohill - Ireland’s tallest mountain. All stages of this teams endurance challenge are found in the drawing above - the river, the road, the mountain, plus their belief in the preciousness of life. Now, why are they doing this? Well, the mental health and wellbeing of children & young people in Ireland is ever-declining with many experiencing an unprecedented level of stress and anxiety. This group know consequences can be devastating and are raising money to help make a difference. Preventative mental health education in schools is proven to work yet, it is not embedded in the curriculum. A Lust For Life @a_lust_for_life is filling the gap. They develop preventative mental health school programmes, which teach children from the earliest age how to enhance and protect their mental health. Since launching in 2020, their programme has been delivered in over 3,500 classrooms with a reach of over 92,000 children nationwide. The funds raised last year contributed to the development of our Junior & Senior Infants Programme which is just launched in August 2024 in time for back to school. They now need funding to develop their secondary school programme starting with 1st year. Their aim is to provide mental health education to support children from junior infants right through to Leaving Cert. They receive no government funding so rely entirely on your financial support to develop their programmes and reach more children. A tonne of love and good energy to these powerful people ❤️⚡️ @maserart @deefitz05 @kipper_maguire @wolfhound_joe @digitalray @skipjak.ie @pbmullingar @colinclarkemobile @coyne_ian @custom__built_guitars @johnpblake114 #TheRising2024 #YouthMentalHealth #MentalHealthAwareness

The A Lust For Life Rising fundraising campaign begins this weekend on Sunday 8th September, and we’re excited to share this very special Niall Breslin & Joe Caslin collaboration which tells the story of the Rising and why we do what we do: creating a world where every child and young person is equipped with early prevention mental health education to enhance and protect their mental health. Please follow along, cheer along, support, DONATE and get involved by Rising up with us on September 15th in a collective show of support for Youth Mental Health. Together, we can lead a generational circuit breaker: so no child is ever shamed for their pain; so that every child has the tools they need to thrive. Do it for the youth and kin. But also, do it for the child within. Please support The Rising via [link in bio], or hesd to alustforlife.com/therising Words by Niall Breslin. Art by Joe Caslin.
