Last month, we visited @jochate in her London studio, where ordinary scenes reveal new rhythms, textures and stories told in remarkable and unexpected ways.
Jo shared a body of work she’ll be bringing to #LAF26 and it’s stayed with us ever since. Her paintings invite you to linger in the in-between, where the seen gives way to the sensed and recognition shifts into something more emotional and fluid.
Walls soften. Shadows drift. Mannequins appear as spectral figures, raising questions of identity and agency. These are not resolved spaces but sites of collapse and transformation, where the logic of dreams quietly takes over.

Titled after Rodin’s white marble sculpture, Danaidi (1885) in Helsinki. The figures in this painting are based on mannequins but I was thinking of Rodin’s sculpture when I painted the figure on the left with the arm bent over her head.
The Danaides were the fifty daughters of Danaus. They were to marry the 50 sons of Aegyptus, mythical king of Egypt. All but one of them killed their husbands on their wedding night. They were condemned to spend eternity carrying water in a sieve.

This painting is based on a mannequin seen from the other side of a shop window. The reflection in the window of the outside becomes the space she is now in, set free from the confines even though she has no legs.
The title is inspired by the lyrics of Rewind by Cleo Sol @gyallikeclee . I was listening to the album while painting on the Radical Residency at @unit1galleryworkshop last year.
I always listen to music while painting - the paintings, my thoughts, the music become intertwined.
