When in Puerto Rican rainforest, you can play a very easy game called "Find the snail!". Though not a jungle with jaguars and monkeys, these giant tree snails (Caracolus caracolla) are literally everywhere. You mostly see the shells, but if you're patient, they'll show you their true face! And sometimes, the snails even take hitchhikers for the slowest ride of their life. Their empty shells are quickly found by other inhabitants, like this Caribbean hermit crab (Coenobita clypeatus)! #snails #treesnails #snailsofinstagram #puertorico #elyunque #rainforest #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #macro #macrofreaks #snailphotography
The only tropical rainforest of the United States, El Yunque, is lush green and full of ample waterfalls thanks to the clouds that are always pinned to the mountain peaks, tall up to 1,065 m. Many believe its name comes from the Taíno word Yuke, or "white earth," referencing to these omnipresent clouds. We could see our house from there, by he sea! ❤️ #elyunque #rainforest #nature #naturephotography #puertorico #oceanforest #jungle #lushgreen #tropicalparadise #nationalforests
Finally in the rainforest again! El Yunque the only tropical rainforest in the United States, located on the slopes of the Sierra de Luquillo mountains and renowned for its unique petroglyphs of Taíno people, who believe that El Yunque is the throne of the chief god Yúcahu. Stay tuned for forest photos! #puertorico #rainforest #elyunque #nationalforest #jungle #junglegirl #tropical #treesofinstagram #naturephotography #carribean
Culebra, also called La Isla Chiquita or Última Virgen, is an island at the border of the (Spanish) Virgin Islands, a part of Puerto Rico, where Taíno people sought refuge and allied with Caribs during the European colonization. Later, it was also a refuge to pirates and sailors. Today it is a refuge of many endemic subspecies of reptiles, birds, plants, and more. The name Culebra possibly comes from the presence of culebra corredora (Borikenophis portoricensis), a tree snake endemic to Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands. I had the luck to encounter Mona ground iguana (Cyclura stejnegeri) that looks like it belongs to prehistory! #culebra #puertorico #iguana #islandlife #beach #bestbeachesintheworld #wildlife #reptiles #turquoise #virginislands
After Costa Rican spiders, I want to tell you about Costa Rican spider-monkeys! Geoffroy's spider monkey (Ateles geoffroyi) is endangered mostly due to deforestation and loss of the treetop habitat, where you can see them swinging through branches while using their long prehensile tail. Spider monkeys enjoy fruit and as you can see in the picture, also various sweet blossoms! #costarica #costaricaprimates #primates #wildlifephotography #naturephotography #primatephotography #monkey #spidermonkey #wildlife #endangeredspecies #corcovado
