When @rubyibarra told me she was finally dropping her first album, I was already proud. We go way back to our college days, when I used to watch her perform for SickSpits, a spoken word collective at UCD. I was floored with her flow, and the fact that we both had Waray roots and lived lives in the East Bay. Then, in the summer of 2017, she asked me to shoot the album cover of Circa91. I was brushing the surface of my photography career at the time, still finding my voice behind the lens while hoping to match the caliber of hers. She let me listen to the album to get a feel for it. I remember ā€˜7000 miles’ ft. @annonemusic was my favorite track. It hits me deep. I’m glad she performed it on her @the.tinydesk.concert @nprmusic set for millions to listen and feel. That shoot became more than just a photograph on an album cover. It became a reminder of where we started, how far we’ve come, and why we keep creating. I know Ruby put her heart and soul in this album, and she continues to for her future projects. I’m so excited that she remained true to herself, for our people and for our culture. She has opened so many doors for us. I was honored then, and I’m still honored now. Thank you, Ruby! Isang Bagsak!

Justin aka @nooks_co0ks - A young dad with a camera, a kitchen, and a dream — not chasing fame, but saving memories. Every Filipino recipe he films is a little love letter for his kids, so that one day when they watch his videos, they’ll see Dad in the kitchen, carry on traditions, and feel right at home. šŸ“ø Photographing Justin in his beautiful kitchen on a Friday afternoon turned into a pretty chill hangout between us. What an opportunity to learn about his journey with YouTube, and it was validating to see another Dad know his way around the kitchen. It was just like being around my own Dad in the kitchen when I was a kid.

Hi, I’m Jaymar - I’m knowledgeable about random sh*t, I can be your personal instigator, and I’m sometimes too structured (and I’m working on it). I’m from the Bay, where I grew up balancing curiosity, creativity, and a habit of overanalyzing everything. I studied environmental toxicology, so the scientific part of my brain thrives on the technical side of photography—settings, light, gear, color science. But my heart? It’s all about the emotion and subject in an image. My creative roots started in short documentary films for friends and nights spent reading EOSHD forums / browsing Flickr before Reddit was a thing. Through my journey as a photographer, I was shaped by the environmental and documentary styles of @joeyldotcom and @xyzacruzbacani , and I’m finding my way back to that honesty in my work. I love sharing here because most of you know me in real life—and this space makes it easier to connect through visuals. Outside the camera, I’m into CrossFit, and I feel most like myself in basketball shorts and a 100% cotton t-shirt. My theme song? ā€œOut of Timeā€ by The Weeknd. My vibe? Staying above my pessimistic thoughts that like to boomerang back, and choosing possibilities instead. If you’re here, I hope you feel what I felt when I made each photo. That’s all I really want to give.

Streets of WaikÄ«kÄ«. This weekend, I stepped away from the mainland for a little escape. And, of course, I couldn’t resist bringing along my little @fujifilmx_us X-M5 to film parts of it. It’s a beast šŸ‘¹. This is my first time trying my hand at videos like these (color grading and all), but there’s something about it that feels familiar—like revisiting an old friend. It takes me back to the days when street photography was my everything. Wandering through busy streets, chasing the light, and letting the camera lead the way. #cinematicphotography #colorgraders #fujifilmxm5

In honor of this year’s Filipino American History Month šŸ‡µšŸ‡, @jmrln x @kariktandance present you a portrait series to showcase traditional Philippine dances. In this week’s portrait set, we showcase ā€˜The Bulaklakan’ (which means Flowers in Filipino/Tagalog) is a traditional Filipino dance that is often performed during fiestas and festivals. This dance celebrates the beauty of flowers that bloom in profusion during the month of May. Beautiful floral arches are skillfully handled by a group of women. Kariktan’s version is more colorful with the addition of our male dancers holding aloft their bamboo poles festooned with flowers and trailing ribbons. Follow us this month, as we continue to share our history through portraits. KARIKTAN Dance Company is a nonprofit cultural organization 501(c)(3) based in Concord, California. The organization’s goal is to promote Philippine Culture through dance and music by means of its members and their families. It helps young Filipino-Americans learn about the cultural traditions of their homeland and helps to provide them with the opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of their native culture and instill pride in their heritage. In honor of this year’s Filipino American History Month šŸ‡µšŸ‡, @jmrln x @kariktandance present you a portrait series to showcase traditional Philippine dances. In this week’s portrait set, we showcase the Pandanggo Sa Ilaw/Oasioas, sharing the Philippines’ mesmerizing, world-famous ā€œdance of lights,ā€ inspired by the flicker of fireflies at dusk. Originating from Lubang Island, Mindoro and Lingayen, Pangasinan, this enchanting dance highlights the women’s graceful dexterity as they balance glasses filled with lights on their hands and heads. Meanwhile, the men demonstrate impressive skill, maintaining balance with the illuminated glasses on their hands and foreheads, even while lying down, embodying both strength and precision. Follow us this month, as we continue to share our history through portraits. KARIKTAN Dance Company is a nonprofit cultural organization 501(c)(3) based in Concord, California. In honor of this year’s Filipino American History Month šŸ‡µšŸ‡, @jmrln x @kariktandance present you a portrait series to showcase traditional Philippine dances. In this week’s portrait set, Jota ManileƱa is a traditional folk dance that is named after the city of Manila. This is a dance of pure Iberian influence from the Spanish colonial period. From the rhythmic clapping of the bamboo castanets to the visual richness of the performers wearing Ternos and Barong Tagalogs, this performance is a beautiful blend of Spanish and Filipino culture. The moves tell a story of history and celebration. Follow us this month, as we continue to share our history through portraits. In honor of this year’s Filipino American History Month šŸ‡µšŸ‡, @jmrln x @kariktandance present you a portrait series to showcase traditional Philippine dances. In this portrait set, ā€˜Panderetas’ is a dance that originated in the province of Tanza, Iloilo, in the Visayas region of the Philippines, and is purely of Iberian influence, - reflecting the country’s colonial past. Performed during social gatherings, female dancers carry ribbon-bedecked tambourines and male dancers perform virtuous zapateado while clicking bamboo castanets. The highlight is a dream sequence with a ā€˜seƱorita’ wielding a Spanish manton. KARIKTAN Dance Company is a nonprofit cultural organization 501(c)(3) based in Concord, California. The organization’s goal is to promote Philippine Culture through dance and music by means of its members, consisting at the present time of 20 young adults ranging from age 16 to 40, and their families. It helps young Filipino-Americans learn about the cultural traditions of their homeland and helps to provide them with the opportunity to experience the richness and diversity of their native culture and instill pride in their heritage. In many ways, the participation in the folk dancing, the use of native costumes, playing instruments, and singing Filipino songs, teaches them not only about tradition, but also occupies their time in meaningful activities, develop confidence, social skills and respect for their elders, their peers and ethnicity.
