Fragrant Bedstraw Gallium Triflorum A humble little plant with a secret talent. ⁣ Hidden in its green leaves is a compound called coumarin, the same aromatic found in tonka beans and sweetgrass. When dried, bedstraw transforms—its mild scent intensifies, and suddenly it’s ready for the baking world. Think custards, wild crème brûlée, or even a foraged twist on vanilla sugar.⁣ She’s no show-off. You’ll find her crawling low along forest floors, often overlooked. Infact by me, for decades! But once you notice her—soft whorled leaves and delicate charm—she becomes unforgettable.⁣ Dry her leaves before using, and plop into vodka to make your own Canadian vanilla -esque extract! The Canadian wild has its own version of vanilla! How magical is that?! ✨⁣ #foragedflavour #wildvanilla #fragrantbedstraw #galiumtriflorum #foragedbaking #madleywild #wildfoods #jordanmadley #foraging #canada #madleywild

Day 4, ma babies! What a closer! 2 gaf halibut- each weighing more than me😆! The 2nd pulled in by the relentless @river.rigdon -on a salmon rod, no less! My first ever #kingsalmon in my last 20 minutes! An entire day, and an entire trip, loaded with laughter and learning. Facilitated by the incredible @cast_alaska and @monstamikea with the constant guidance and hard work of deckhand Hunter. There are not enough words to express my gratitude for the unreal last-minute gift that was this bucket list experience. 💙🐟 Lastly, thank you to my killer group- the Rigdon crew- who let this solo, middle-aged weirdo latch onto their charter to have one of the best experiences of her life! See you in a year! Alaska.... you are pure magic. May you never change. . . . . . #KingSalmon #SalmonFishing #Halibut #HalibutFishing #OceanFishing #FishingAlaska #Alaska #Rockfish #Foraging #BucketList #Adventure #WildFoods #JordanMadley #MadleyWild #WomenWhoopFish #WomenWhoHunt #Hunting

Bullwhip kelp pickles! 🌊Snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean mid January- so worth it for these babies! Mineral rich, high in iodine and antioxidants, low in fat and calories. These tasty, crunchy, sea snacks will surely level up the coastal charcuterie situation! Let 'em rest for a while, then garnish your Caesar, folks! What. A. Vibe! Once the hold fasts detach from their anchor spot, they do not reattach. So washed up on shore, or floating on the surface, these beauties are fair game. A peeler makes quick work of the outer layer, remember to rinse with sea water, and chop however you'd like! Most people slice rounds, but I wanted to be able to pull them out of a jar like a pickle to garnish a martini! You do you, ma babies! Remember- pickling is a great way to make an ingredient shelf stable so you can enjoy it year round. What's the weirdest thing you've pickled? . . . . . #bullwhipkelpickpes #wildfoods #coastalforaging #madleywild

Way way up ... As far as the roads go. Where the air frosts your lashes the moment you step out the truck. Where the -30c is not a bad 5am ❄️❄️ Where even in snow shoes you fall chin deep constantly 🤣 Pulling each other back up again..and again...and again. Searching for grouse at the top of the evergreens, and tiny floofy snowballs motoring from the base of one willow bush to the next. Blink and you'll miss them. Sneeze and your eyes can't find them again. If they're not moving- you'll never spot them in the first place! The best meals over fire over snow banks. The laughing til my cheeks hurt. The camaraderie. The total support and mentorship. The all for one-everyone for joy and fun! The selfless, open hearted friendship offered. The inspiration. The gratitude. The laughing, and laughing, and then also the laughing. Heart healed. Cheeks sore. Limits met. Freezer full. ❄️🤍❄️ . . . . . #ptarmigan #birdhunting #canada #wildfoods #girlswhohunt

🌊 OH. MAH. GAW!!! The sweetness! The BEST MUSSELS of my ENTIRE LIFE were had in this little Airbnb! 🏝️I harvested on two different days, and the second day I climbed up and down this little rock cliff of an island... I made them the second I got home! Aside from steaming them on the beach- they couldn't have been more fresh! 🌊These are a great species to harvest because the California mussel reproduces at a crazy quick rate! Prolific little pockets of sweetness that they are. Wanna know the craziest thing that happened this day? YOU'LL NEVER GUESS! Take a guess. YOU'LL NEVER GUESS!!! . . . . . #OceanForaging #MadleyWild #Musselharvesting #WildFoods #PacificNorthwest

Bull Kelp🌊🌊 Nereocystis luetkeana Umami flavored deliciousness! 🌱Growing up to 2ft a day, with a stipe as long as 150ft... this nutritional powerhouse is a carbon sink. Absorbing massive amounts of CO2, which then gets buried in the sediment of the ocean floor for centuries once the kelp dies, and sinks to the bottom. 🪨Growing in the rocky intertidal zones of the Pacific Coast, it creates underwater forests that provide key habitat for fish nurseries and invertebrates. 💊Kelp is rich in iodine, calcium, magnesium, potassium, essential vitamins like K and B vitamins, as well as fiber. It lowers cholesterol, acts as a prebiotic, and regulates metabolism and brain function. ⚕️Be mindful of dosage as excessive iodine levels can lead to thyroid issues. Kelp can absorb heavy metals, so harvest from active, clean waters! . . . . . #kelp #oceanhealth #foraging #canada #wildfoods

Venison vs. Beef 🦌🐄 Folks anticipate whitetail to be quite gamey, I don't find that to be true at all! In fact, I find it to be a much more neutral flavor than commercially farmed beef. Which now has an incredibly strong taste to me. Let's talk nutritional comparison per serving Protein 🦌26g 🐄23g Calories 🦌134kcal 🐄200kcal Fat 🦌3g 🐄10g Saturated fat 🦌1g 🐄4g Iron 🦌50%drv 🐄moderate Venison is far leaner, even compared to organic beef. Fat content can be 3 to 5 times higher than in whitetail. Venison is richer in iron, zinc, phosphorus, B vitamins, and have superior omega-3 to omega 6 ratio compared to grain fed beef. An important differentiator to keep in mind is that wild venison is generally free from the chemical exposure of added antibiotics, growth hormones, and pesticide residue found in some farming environments. 💪🏼 A great high protein, after school snack- whitetail nachos! Tomatoes, avocado, a spritz of lime juice... whatever you like! Toss it on there and dig in! Do it all in one cast-iron pan for easy cleanup! . . . . . #Whitetailrecipes #WomenWhoHunt #WhitetailSeason #wildfoods #badbunny

MOST IMPORTANTLY... ⬇️ 1. Plan on going for clams 😂 Our original plan was clam digging! We put all the research in to figure out the different species we were able to harvest, the exact location, and the amount we could forage. What a beautiful lesson in abundance, as always! These gorgeous wild pacific oysters were... EVERYWHERE! Although we did harvest a couple clams, this quickly became the focus. This was a massive bucket list check for me! 2. BE SAFE! Which we all know should be no. 1. Make sure you do your research people! Remember that bivalves are filters. Closures happen all the time, and change constantly. Make sure you're checking your local department of fisheries website DAY TO DAY, and RIGHT BEFORE YOU GO for any closures! Do not harvest around marinas, city drainage sites, or if the water just looks yucky! Be extremely picky. Know the physical signs of consuming anything contaminated. 3. Regulations Make sure you can easily identify the species you're looking for, the protected species, and the difference between them. Know your daily limits, your bag limits, any size restrictions. It's up to every single one of us to make sure that we are sustainably harvesting so our oceans can stay as bountiful and healthy as possible. Foragers and fishermen should be fierce stewards of the ecosystems we harvest from. The relationship should be symbiotic. 4. Know your tides This type of foraging happens during low tide. That tide can come back in quickly though! When you get carried away foraging, it happens before you know it! Always be aware of your environment. Set an alarm if necessary. Don't go alone at night! 5. Bring the right gear Oysters love to glue themselves onto things! A tiny little hammer to break the seal will do just fine. Hip waders, fishing bibs with high wellies, gloves all recommended! Headlamp, flashlight, charged cellphone, and a BIG BUCKET! Remember** Have a storage plan! If they're not going in your face right away, make sure you have space in your fridge! Don't waste! . . #Oysters #LowTide #fishing #asmreating #wildfoods
