Jim Peterik has written some of rock’s most enduring songs, but one of the biggest lessons he keeps coming back to is simple: write from something real.
That does not mean every lyric has to be strictly autobiographical. It means the emotion has to come from somewhere honest. Your own life, something you have lived through, or something you have witnessed closely enough to understand. Peterik has talked for years about drawing from real experience and observation in his songwriting, the same approach he has shared in his speaking appearances and in his work teaching the craft through Songwriting for Dummies.
That mindset has been there all along in a career that runs from The Ides of March’s “Vehicle” to Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” along with major co-writes for .38 Special, Sammy Hagar, and others. The songs may get bigger, but the starting point stays human. A broken heart you recognize. A new love you can see all over someone’s face. A detail, a feeling, a truth that gives the song something real to hold onto.

Some songs fade into nostalgia. “Eye of the Tiger” never really left.
More than 40 years after it was written for Rocky III, the song still lands the way an anthem is supposed to. Jim Peterik talks here about why it has lasted, and why it continues to connect decade after decade. That staying power was there from the beginning. When Sylvester Stallone asked Peterik and Frankie Sullivan to write the song for the film, Peterik has recalled Stallone telling them he wanted something that would outlive all of them. He got it. “Eye of the Tiger” went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks, win a Grammy, earn an Oscar nomination, and become one of the most enduring songs ever attached to Rocky.

Jim Peterik has spent decades writing songs that stick with people. From “Eye of the Tiger” to “Vehicle,” his catalog is full of moments that feel bigger than the songs themselves.
That same instinct shows up in his work with longtime collaborator Don Barnes, a Music Drives Us Podcast alum. Their connection comes through in “The Look,” a standout from Barnes’ recent record built around the real story of Don meeting his wife at an airport, and turning that moment into something lasting.
It is the kind of song that doesn’t need to be loud to hit. Just honest.
