✨Faculty Spotlight! ✨
Jillian Ohl is an assistant professor in graphic design here at WCU.
.
Jillian is an illustrator, artist, and designer and makes work inspired by ideas of femineity, pop culture, and personal narrative. She works in a variety of analog and digital mediums including drawing, painting, collage, and print making.
.
Advice Jillian would give to MFA graduate students/artists is:
“It is called an artistic practice because you have to practice. I will not make work unless it is fun for me to make.
Come have fun with me anytime.
@jillyohl “

New cards are in the pipeline for summer markets and stockists. This one gets a lil front and back action.

I hate having you leave but I love watching you walk away 😘 send to a friend. Or an enemy. Doesn’t make a difference to me.

Any day where we can collage in class is a good day! In illustration, I participate in every in class exercise because why do they get to have all the fun? Abusing the functions of the copy machine is a crucial teaching tool.

Much to my shock and horror, the student included a cut out of Liza Minnelli without knowing who she was so I’m really doing the work of educating the youths.
Nothing is worse than having to listen to me slowly recap the entire plot of Cabaret.

VOTE for my TShirt!!
Last year my designs got 2nd and 3rd place so it’s time to go for the gold. But I’m happy to be in the company of lots of good designs.
-
Strong lesson learned - BEFORE you start your design check to see shirt color options. 🫣 Like Alanis said, you live, you learn.

Some pages from my “Thank You For Sharing” zine about the deep melodramatic pains behind the creative process.

I’ve probably talked to you about having an inner critic, so now you can read about it too.

This owes a big debt to a presentation I attended by artist @following.the.wonder Jaclyn McCabe.

I worked on a mural design with my colleague, Erin Tapley, and while the design was not chosen (sad) I’m still happy with the result - at least I learned a lot of native fish names.
-
Anyone need a 20 foot long fish mural? 🐟
Cyanotypes from Professor Jillian Ohl’s Typography II class 💙🤍
Thanks to help from Rebekah Alviani and Brooklin Routt, these students were able to create an entire alphabet with new, inventive letterforms!
Academics are facing a time of limited free speech. But sometimes you have to speak your mind despite fear of repercussions from the state or local 30 something white men.

Thanks @pitchfork for the official review

Thanks, I got it at Versayce.
I got inspired by reading Adam Naymans book “It Doesn’t Suck” about Showgirls. Because I’ll dive into any discussion around “is it camp?”

If you’re looking for something to watch this weekend while you’re bundled up inside, I recommend. 💋
