The big news I alluded to last week? I’m starting a Substack, and the first post is live today! It’s called Counter Space, and the tagline I’ve landed on is “a shopping and design newsletter about what we want and why we want it.”
Think of it as a companion to @_sightunseen_ , a new place for me to go deep on trends, objects, and ideas, unpacking where things came from and why they suddenly feel so desirable. I’ll be drawing on my 20 years of experience as a design editor to help readers develop and refine their taste and personal style when it comes to interiors and objects. It’ll be educational! It’ll be shoppy! It’ll be weirdly specific! It’ll definitely be a good time.
Launching a Substack is something I’ve been thinking about for a while. Sight Unseen is a fulfilling, ever-evolving project, and I’ll still be doing all the things I’ve done there for the past 16 years. But I’ve increasingly felt the desire to create something on my own, that showcased a side of my writing I’ve only begun to explore. I’m hoping, as ever, to bring a sense of clarity and fun to the world of design.
Am I late to the Substack game? Sure, but during the pandemic I was home-schooling two children and writing a book soooooo….. 🌀🕳️ But I’m excited to add my voice to the mix! And I’d be honored if you wanted to come along for the ride. Hit the link in my bio to subscribe!!
Thank you to @garrett_elizabeth_office for the excellent branding and @mcguiremcmanus for the perfect portrait @shopquarters ! 💖
This just in! @jillsinger , the co-founder and editor-in-chief of @_sightunseen_ , is selling lucite bookends, a 1970s Italian table lamp, and a Heath Ceramics vase in our subscriber-exclusive Classifieds section. Tap the link in our bio to shop her special drop.
I said “need a word for when you’ve gotten the new thing and it’s perfect but it’s also the first step in a completely new look for a space and your mind is living in some future version of a room that doesn’t exist yet” and the brilliant @danamolly fired back with “gateway decor” so yeah you can probably expect a @counter___space on that in the next couple of months 🧡
ONE MONTH OF COUNTER SPACE <3
A year ago, I parked jillsinger.substack.com, not knowing exactly what it would be, but feeling like it was something I had to do. Still not entirely sure where it will end up, but I’m having a good time getting there! Thank you to everyone who has shared / subscribed / liked / commented/ told me something was funny / told me something I wrote made their morning / sent me an example of the very thing I was talking about / remembered some random thing I said four newsletters ago and DMed me about it / and more. Please keep doing it!!
Here with my serious face to tell you I’ll be in back in my happy place — TOKYO! ツ — December 9-19, where I’ll be co-curating and co-directing this year’s @designtide_tokyo Main Exhibition. If you’re in Tokyo, come by the fair December 12-14 to say hi and see the good work; if not please send recs!!! 📷 @mcguiremcmanus
I have something BIG launching next week ✨, so I figured it was time to retire my Instagram profile pic, which, for all the years I’ve been on here, has been a photo of me taken by @lizarnold in Miami; I’m 29 years old and wearing a sequined shirt I’m pretty sure is from Forever 21, which is thankfully no longer my personal brand. Last month, I did the most fun photoshoot of my life with @mcguiremcmanus , where I wore all my favorite clothes and traipsed around some of my favorite design locales in lower Manhattan. I’ve never felt more like myself in photos ❤️

In Stockholm, I got to tour @acnestudios HQ, located in the former Czech embassy building designed by Brutalist architect Jan Bočan, and I was like …. maybe I shouldn’t work from home.
(First 5 images by me, second 5 archival 🥰)
Temporary restyling of my house we did for @_sightunseen_ using lights from @lightology and rugs from @nordicknots and a whole trunkful of vintage art and objects from FB Marketplace, upstate antiquing, and weirdly the florist in Amagansett? Anyway now it’s back to normal but I kept at least one thing from each category 😜
Finally went to Stockholm *not* in the dead of winter and saw so much sun and color 🫶💕🌈 thank you @svenskttenn (whose gorgeous shop and 100-year exhibition are in these photos — more on @_sightunseen_ later next week!) + @lisanrd and my forever love @moranmoran
