Black by Design: Inspired by Where the Black Designers Are by Cheryl D. Miller, this exhibition centers what's always been true: Black designers have always been here-shaping, influencing, and redefining visual culture.
Curated by Zaire McPhearson, Black by Design brings together the work of Joanna Henry, Michael Dupuy, Brentae Holmes, and McPhearson in a powerful dialogue of memory, lineage, culture, and creative resistance. Across different practices and perspectives, the exhibition becomes a living archive-holding space for what's been overlooked while imagining what's possible when these voices are centered.
This exhibition opens April 21.
On view through June 27.
Reception will be held on June 5.
Come through, take your time, and experience the work.
Join us June 5 at 6:00 PM as we celebrate the opening of Black by Design—an exhibition centering the presence, impact, and future of Black designers in visual culture.
Come experience the work, connect with the community, and engage in conversation.
Artist talk + community dialogue begins at 7:00 PM.
Free and open to the public.
See you there.
Black by design is on view in the Simona Atkins Allen Gallery. Come see the works of @zairemcphearson , @jhenrystudio , @thepeenut_gallery and @_randy.b all telling a story of black identity through the medium of digital design! Black designers have never been NOT on the scene—only overlooked. Black by Design brings that fact into focus, centering the voices, dreams, and messages that continue to shape visual culture.
This exhibition is a living archive—honoring freedom, exploring identity, and expanding the language of design through memory, text, and lived experience.
Opening Reception: June 5, 6:00 pm @deltaartscenter

The goal was to finish this piece by midnight 😮💨
This clay did not want to work with me at all but it all worked out in the end.
What do you all think?
#pottery
Currently working on new pieces inspired by my roots. This first piece is a reimagining of a yabba bowl. A yabba with a foot lol
Historically used in colonial and post colonial periods for utilitarian purposes, the yabba today a vessel that has become part of Jamaican ceramic culture.
Once I nail down the shape that I’m looking for I hope I can make even larger ones.
I’m beyond grateful to have work included among so many talented black ceramicists. And it sold?! I’m still shook 😅
Big thank you to @artenoirnow and @potterynorthwest for providing a space for all of us to shine ✨
If you’re in Seattle or the surrounding area make sure you see “Black Clay” before it’s gone.
Closing Reception: Sat 21, 2026
Exhibit End: extended to Mar 1, 2026
“The cosmos is within us. We are made of star-stuff. We are a way for the universe to know itself”
This print, titled “Dichotomy,” explores the ways we are connected—both to one another in the present and to those who came before us. Each of us is a continuation of our past selves and a reflection of each other, formed from the same star-stuff. The past, present, and future do not exist separately; they reside within us all.
It is currently on display at @geminiarts_sc for their exhibit “Constellations” until February 27th
Please meet J Henry (@jhenrystudio ), one of our featured artists for the Crowned by the Roots exhibition! So grateful and excited to have her and her work in this exhibition.
Joanna Henry is a South Carolina based painter, ceramist, and curator. She graduated from Winthrop University in 2011 with a Bachelor Degree in Fine Arts with a concentration in painting and drawing. Additionally, she has her Masters certification in Arts Management from the University of Massachusetts: Amherst.
Currently Joanna works with the Catawba Indian Nation as their Artist Development Specialist in their Cultural Division. Where she curates exhibits, and coordinates opportunities for tribal artisans.
Roots Worn High — This work centers around the appreciation of how our hair, our crowns, are grounded in ancestry and regality. Yet in the same instance humbling. It emphasizes the acknowledgement of where we’ve come from.
The Crown I Never Set Down — This work frames hair as a continuous expression of power and self-possession. Braids adorned by a golden head wrap operate as a crown. Fabric once used to hide and limit the autonomy of our hair is reclaimed as a symbol to reaffirm dignity.
J Henry will be speaking during the Artist Talks! Come join us to hear her perspectives.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the programmed events. We look forward to seeing you there!
**UPDATE: Due to inclement weather, the show will officially open Tuesday, February 3rd.**

Here we are, once again at the end of another year. 2025 has been reflective, restful, and encouraging. Next year will be another step forward in this art adventure of mine 😌
Thank you to everyone that came out to the Hunnid Dollar Art Fair to support local artists!!
After refreshing my wall twice I left with only two pieces, which is amazing and reassuring that people like what I’m doing with my art 😅😁
