Feat: Curse Touched Taking cursed magic items has never been more appealing. This feat closes the second week of grimdark archetypes by letting your spellcaster forge a symbiotic bond with hexes and forbidden artifacts, turning each cursed attunement into sharper magic and a lingering, unnatural resilience. Built for both D&D 5e and the updated 5.5e rules, it’s the perfect finishing piece for the School of Malediction wizard or any character whose story began with a curse they refused to break. What cursed relic has your caster secretly bound themselves to, and what quiet promises did it whisper in return? — #dnd5e #dndhomebrew #ttrpg #dungeonmaster #grimdark

The Hexbook Wondrous Item, Very Rare (requires attunement by a spellcaster) This iron-bound tome once belonged to a witch who was burned at the stake for teaching forbidden magic. As she stood there, she poured a final curse into the book. A ghostly hand fused to the spine acts as a living bookmark, twitching whenever magic is near, while a green crystal embedded in the tome glows faintly with pure malice stored within. Just be careful, as the book demands results, and failing your spells may cause you to feel a displeased, ghostly hand digging its fingers into your palm. This tome would especially shine in the hands of a School of Malediction wizard, but any spellcaster who dares to bind themselves to a witch’s vengeful legacy and weaponize their enemies’ successes would find it a valuable tool. — #dungeonandragons #dnditems #ttrpg #darkfantasy #witch

Wizard Subclass: School of Malediction Following the decaying path of the knight, this second week I am reimagining the classic mage archetype. Instead of scholars studying safely in pristine towers and libraries, the School of Malediction wizards venture into collapsed temples and forbidden crypts, deliberately exposing themselves to ancient curses that most heroes try to avoid. Their mere presence feels deeply unsettling, causing candle flames to gutter without wind and mirrors to reflect things that are not there. These spellcasters understand that a curse is a living entity, older and far more potent than any traditional spell. They willingly absorb this corrupting magic into their own flesh, acting as hollow vessels to redirect that same suffering outward to strike down their enemies. What kind of ancient sin or forbidden bargain has left a permanent mark on your wizard, and how is it warping their body and mind? — #dnd5e #dndhomebrew #ttrpg #darkfantasy #wizard

Feat: Eroder A knight’s survival in a dying world often depends on finding the cracks in an enemy’s armor. This feat wraps up the first week of grimdark archetypes, allowing you to turn every splash of acid into a brittle opening, letting your strikes hit with maximum force, and a well-placed attack can shatter their resistance entirely. The feat is fully compatible with both D&D 5e and the updated 2024 rules, making it the perfect finishing piece for the Rust Knight fighter subclass and this first week of dark fantasy posts. — #dnd5e #dndhomebrew #ttrpg #dungeonmaster #darkfantasy

Pitted Relic Weapon (any melee weapon), Rare (requires attunement) This weapon was pulled from the damp earth of forgotten battlefields where the metal has spent decades absorbing the essence of the fallen. This blade is covered in a living rust that feels more like a parasitic organism than a piece of steel. Wounds it leaves fester stubbornly, refusing to close and carrying infection deeper into the body. This weapon is the perfect companion for the Rust Knight subclass I shared earlier this week, a cruel tool for any martial character who wants to make sure their enemies stay down by cutting off their ability to recover during the heat of combat. — #dnd5e #dndhomebrew #dnditems #ttrpg #darkfantasy

Fighter Subclass: Rust Knight There is something magnetic about a broken hero. For the first entry in this grim, dark fantasy series, I reimagined the fighter as a knight, not in shining armor, but as someone who has fully embraced the inevitable decay of the world. The Rust Knight transforms their own physical deterioration to their advantage, as the rot that should have killed them instead becomes a spreading plague. The wet creak of rusted joints in their armor, combined with the smell of damp earth and decayed fungi, makes the presence of these knights deeply unsettling. Their weapon strikes deliver bursts of acid that gnaw through armor, while their bodies shrug off poison and disease with an eerie calm. What kind of plague or curse is your knight hiding under that rusted helm? Let me know if you would play a character who has already accepted their inevitable end. — #dnd5e #dndhomebrew #ttrpg #grimdark #darkfantasy

Lash of Displacement Weapon (whip), Rare (requires attunement) ✨Post made in collaboration with @greengobletgames ✨ This is the third and final post we’ve made for my “Monster Harvesting” series, crafting magic items from monsters’ body parts in a very Monster Hunter style. Braided from the black tentacles of a six-legged feline predator, this whip slips past cover effortlessly, leaving shimmering afterimages with every swing, and multiplying into phantom lashes while you blur in and out of an enemy’s vision. Oh, and similarly to the Scepter of the Accursed Eye, this is definitely NOT an item made from a Displacer Beast, for legal reasons... The image of a rogue whipping a squad of confused bandits with phantom lashes through the air while they stab at shadows. — #dnd5e #dndhomebrew #dnditems #ttrpg #dungeonmaster

Spitting Carapace Armor (shield), Rare (requires attunement) ✨Post made in collaboration with @greengobletgames ✨ This is the second of three posts we’ve made for my "Monster Harvesting" series, crafting magic items from monsters' body parts in a very Monster Hunter style. This bulky shield is made from the severed head of a large Ankheg, still clicking its mandibles and dripping with corrosive acid. Blocking a hit with it lets you spray sticky sludge right back at the attacker or snap the mandibles shut on a foe who misses you with an attack, locking them in place. The image of a monster-slayer ranger or fighter wearing a monster’s head as a shield sounds really badass… — #dnd5e #dnditems #ttrpg #dndmonsters #monsterhunter

Scepter of the Accursed Eye Rod, Rare (requires attunement by a spellcaster) ✨Post made in collaboration with @greengobletgames ✨ This is the first of three posts we’ve made for my “Monster Harvesting” series, where I adapt creature abilities and lore into magical items you can wear and wield, Monster Hunter style. Carved from petrified wood and topped with a twitching green eye, this scepter reveals your allies’ most embarrassing secrets while helping you pry hidden weaknesses from your enemies. Just try to ignore the constant whispers in your head, or you might find yourself slipping into a short-term form of madness. Oh, and for legal reasons, this is definitely NOT an item made from a Nothic... Imagine a paranoid warlock or a nosy bard using all this insight to keep the party in check while slowly losing their grip on reality. — #dnd5e #dndhomebrew #dnditems #ttrpg #monsterhunter

Flask of Despair Breathing Potion, Rare When a hoardwraith is finally destroyed, sometimes its last breath (literally) can be trapped in alchemically treated glass before the spirit seeps back into the gold of its hoard. This dragon shaped flask holds that bottled despair, and drinking it lets you exhale the same ghostly flames as a hoardwraith, leaving your enemies numbed and stumbling around the battlefield. It has more than one use too, so you can unleash that debilitating breath like a true wyrm. — #dndhomebrew #dnditems #dnd5e #dungeonsanddragons #ttrp

Avarice Weapon (any weapon), Very Rare (requires attunement) When a dragon’s spirit refuses to leave its treasure, sometimes that soul finds a new home in the finest piece of its hoard. This weapon carries the soul of Vorthakis the Unyielding, a paranoid and greedy wyrm who whispers bitter complaints whenever you reach for your coin purse. You can see its wispy silhouette coiling around the weapon in combat, luring foes with false treasure and ensuring you cling to your “hoard” with a grip tighter than any dragon’s claw. I can totally see a greedy rogue or a haunted paladin slowly realizing their new sword is the one corrupting them and forcing them to act a certain way. — #dungeonsanddragons #dnditems #sword #ttrpg #dragon

Monster: Hoardwraith (CR 16, Huge Undead Dragon) When a dragon’s greed is so strong and it refuses to let go of its gold even in death, its spirit seeps into the coins and gems until the entire treasure pile rises up as a single vengeful draconic entity. These undead dragons float through walls, remember the exact spot of every copper piece, and exhale a ghostly flame that drains the strength of anyone in the area. I just hope that one greedy rogue in the group doesn’t pocket anything shiny from a hoardwraith’s lair or they will not be able to sleep as the whispers of this spectral dragon follow them across the planes until they bring it back. I can totally see a hoardwraith turning a simple dragon lair raid into the kind of nightmarish session your party will still be talking about weeks later. — #dndhomebrew #dndmonsters #fantasycreatures #dragon #ttrpg
