Faith Ringgold (1930-2024) was a pioneering artist and activist of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries 🤩
Her practice pushed against a predominantly white art historical tradition, leading her to develop forms that could more fully explore Black identity, memory, and lived experience.
Street Story Quilt is one of Ringgold’s most powerful works within the “story quilt” form she pioneered in the early 1980s. Building on earlier experiments with unstretched fabric paintings inspired by Tibetan thangkas and Central African Kuba designs, these quilts weave together image and text to tell layered stories of African American life, particularly within her Harlem community.

Across the mid-20th century, the borough sustained a dense network of clubs, social spaces, and cultural institutions where jazz was shaped in real time through community gathering and exchange.
From The East in Bed-Stuy to Tony’s Club Grandean in Crown Heights, from Putnam Central to Sistas’ Place, these sites trace a geography of sound that is also a geography of Black cultural life and experimentation. Many of the artists central to jazz history moved fluidly between Brooklyn and Manhattan, building an ecosystem that was continuous rather than divided 🎺

MAX MORAN: 2026 JGI New Orleans Jazz Cohort Fellow 🌟
Moran @maxmoranmusic is a Louisiana-born musician and composer known for his versatility on electric bass, upright bass, and synthesizer, providing a solid, soulful foundation to a number of classic and progressive bands.
After performing since the age of 13 and receiving a full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music, he spent over 10 years as the bassist for NEA Jazz Master Donald Harrison, and has shared the stage with artists including Davell Crawford, Leo Nocentelli, Bernie Worrell, Christian (Chief Adjuah) Scott, and Jamison Ross.
His band, Neospectric, features a rotating cast of New Orleans’ most virtuosic young instrumentalists, while the award-winning Bridge Trio, co-led with Joe Dyson and Conun Pappas, has performed at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and released two self-produced albums.

VICTOR CAMPBELL: 2026 JGI New Orleans Jazz Cohort Fellow 🌟
Campbell @victorcampbell.art is a young jazz piano player hailing from Camagüey, Cuba. His compelling style combines virtuosity, whimsy, charisma and technical prowess.
Victor first visited New Orleans in 2012 as a teenager, part of an exchange program with the Louis Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp. That visit changed his life, and he has been feverishly studying all styles of New Orleans music ever since. He can effortlessly transition from a blues solo to a Cuban timba montuno and then right into a classical piano selection.
After performing as a featured new artist at several CubaNOLA showcases, Victor now has several New Orleans-based bands and collaborations, including his high-energy big band Timba Swamp, and is a fervent leader of the city’s growing Cuba-New Orleans fusion renaissance scene.

Lands @thestevelands is a Baton Rouge-bred, New Orleans-based trumpeter and composer who’s had the distinct pleasure of performing with some of the world’s greatest musicians, including Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Elvis Costello, Herlin Riley, Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Victor Goines, and more.
As a composer, he’s scored the music for a handful of projects with filmmaker Marion Hill, including the Sundance Film Festival Award-winning feature Ma Belle, My Beauty.
Hot on the heels of two sold-out debut performances of his signature project, Rearranging the Planets at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA), Lands continues to present new movements from this body of original compositions.

Boyd-Cannon @tonyaboydcannon does not simply perform music – she channels it, shapes it, teaches it, and uses it as a conduit for restoration.
A classically trained musician and nationally recognized educator, she brings a depth and intentionality to her craft that transcends genre. Whether she’s moving listeners through heart-stretching ballads or igniting crowds with jazz, funk, rock, gospel, or blues, Tonya refuses limitations.
A vocal phenomenon, her work spans singles, EPs, full-length albums, and collaborations. Some may know her from NBC’s The Voice, or as the voice behind “In New Orleans,” but many know her simply as “teacher.”

An established bandleader, composer, performer, and improviser, Nealand @auroranealand has been a force in the New Orleans music scene since 2004.
Combining conservatory training with street busking, she creates work that is innovative, sensitive, and daring—often incorporating stage theatrics, handmade instruments, and the sonic possibilities of everyday objects.
Her latest record, Songs My Others Taught Me, will be released soon.
