Went to my high school to speak on Community and Culture. Told the young Pasifika students I never liked how adults talked about our culture when I was growing up, because I always felt the realness was missing. Said I’m just gonna say what I would’ve liked to hear when I was their age—the real shit. (Well, shii… at least tried to say it—had me sounding like Mighty Mouse, “my WiiIIIFEEE” smh.) Proceeded to tell them: >Don’t feel the pressure to make a career decision at your age, or think you need to go to university just because others are. Make the decision because you want to, not because of anyone else. University is expensive, and if you’ve gone because of someone else’s expectations, you’ll be left with a fat debt to pay, a degree worth nothing, and just another obstacle to achieving financial freedom—alongside all the others we already face being who we are. >The phrase “Respect your elders” is some bullshit, because it often gets confused with: whatever anyone older than you says is the right way to do things. There’ve been too many points in my life, as I continue to learn, where the elders I had to listen to didn’t know shit. Left me with a whole lotta shit to unlearn. Said to respect your elders, for sure—but keep an open mind and question everything. >Read out the meaning behind my “Drink Ups” painting, in hopes that they hold each other accountable when a brother is hurting. Sick of us acting blind and stupid at these damn drink ups—sitting across from each other knowing damn well the alcohol’s just masking the pain, but y’all still hand them another bottle nstead of talking to them. Now that’s some fake shit. It was dope, they told me after, that a couple students could relate and began to tear up when I read out the Drink Ups description. I then touched on the importance of reading books, and recommended 3 books I wish I’d read earlier. 🏁 Thankyou for having me @janatuilau @anafilipo_ ya’ll doing the real work our people need ❤️
