This has been in the making since last November when I told Alex I wanna share my writing but I’m terrified, and he told me if it makes me this nervous/excited, it’s that much more important that I share it

Commemorating having my art up in SoHo ❥
Here I am opening night with my hair still damp from getting caught in the rain earlier that day. And I love that, because I remember every day I’ve ever gotten caught in the rain... especially if I get to take a nap afterwards (idk if y’all’s body does this but the feeling of sleep after getting drenched rivals a strong opioid & I experience it like a gift). I remember exactly where I was the last time it happened in 2015. So, I know this day will stay with me.
And what an amazing day to keep.
A full gallery. Faces I love. Flood warnings ignored. The first time I witnessed my work move a stranger to tears.
I honestly expected none of it, but am immensely grateful. Thank you to everyone who came up to me & shared the night with me.
The feeling rivaled a strong opioid. I experienced it all like a gift.

“Don’t Awaken Love Before Its Time”

Artist note:
This is a love story in the making.
Two people in their own rooms at night—separated physically, but in the same place spiritually.
The same magic that happens overnight to repair muscles after exercise & recover the mind from a day’s worry is at work here in deep sleep. In secret. In the quiet of night.
Without healing, they cannot come together as they are meant to come together.
So they rest…
Let morning come when it comes.

The concept for this piece came to me while doing a live painting at @life.is.good.nyc — those who were there saw v1 of this painting as a woman asleep inside a cocoon. They put me on the mic and I rambled about how painful it can be to try & date someone before you’re ready.
Soon after, the idea evolved. I realized I didn’t want a metaphor on a metaphor… being asleep was enough. And I wanted to show the other side of what she’s repairing herself for.
The romantic in me would like to imagine that as she “sleeps” which is to say as she goes to therapy, seeks prayer, seeks wisdom, works to identify her triggers, dispels lies, practices new patterns of thinking, practices kindness, practices self control, strengthens her understanding of self worth, learns how to say no, learns how to say yes, learns when & how to stay, falls deeper in love with life, grows in deeper reliance on her maker… I would like to believe there is someone on the other side who is doing his own work.
I love the idea of two healed people coming together with readiness to give.
Can you imagine the safety they’d share?
I love this idea that nothing is wasted, that two people can love each other without having each other yet.

Artist note:
I want safe love for every person regardless of gender expression, but there’s a special ache in my heart for all women who deserved and deserve better. That’s the space I made this painting from.
And it’s not hopeless.
That’s why I pictured them together, at a crossroads. Not separated. Vulnerable. Willing.
I think it depicts how hopeful we can remain.
Maybe this is a new couple, and she’s pleading him to be different from what she’s known. Maybe this is year 5, and she needs him to be different from how he’s been. Maybe this is year 10, and this is nothing more than an undressing of her pride, asking him to remember how sacred her heart is in a culture where everything feels replaceable, even people. Where everything is competition. Where no one is special. Where flipping the channel is how we treat everything under the sun.
Whatever the case…
I imagine the tvs are muted, and her heartbeat is loud.
