Comedian, actor, producer, and celebrated Yellow Springs, Ohio resident #DaveChappelle sat down with writer and director @Jeymes Samuel following a screening of Samuel’s new movie, #TheBookOfClarence.
The film, which stars @lakeithstanfield3 , is a bold twist on the timeless Hollywood-era Biblical epic as told through the lens of Black culture. TriStar Pictures will release Legendary Pictures’ The Book of Clarence in movie theaters nationwide today, January 12, 2024.
The pop-up movie screening was held at Chappelle’s new comedy and music venue, Dave Chappelle’s YS Firehouse, as part of a series of pre-launch events dubbed YS Firehouse Sound Check Series.
Today the legacy of music and film suffered a real loss.
The Jamaican born reggae legend Jimmy Cliff has passed away.
Jimmy Cliff had accolades far beyond the one I am about to mention, but he is the sole reason my debut movie is named The Harder They Fall. Jimmy Cliff starred in and created the soundtrack for The Harder They Come, the classic Jamaican film and one of my favourite movies of all time.
At the beginning of that movie, the characters are sitting in a cinema watching Sergio Corbucci’s Django (1966), starring Franco Nero. That film shapes his behaviour throughout the story, especially at the end.
For me, in my child-like imagination, The Harder They Fall is the film they would have been watching if it had existed in that time. That is the story I have always carried with me. The title The Harder They Fall comes from the words of Jimmy Cliff’s song The Harder They Come:
“So as sure as the sun will shine
I’m gonna get my share now, what’s mine
And then the harder they come
The harder they fall, one and all”
Jimmy Cliff wrote and produced that song. And that song shaped the way I wrote the film. His influence is all over my debut film.
