Trying some of the patterns I’ve been making in textured knits. Really slow going with the garter carriage while I daydream about making things on proper industrial machines. This could get interesting yet, but an active project means that I’ll have to develop it more in a couple of months.

Learning double-bed machine knitting this past week, with some promising outcomes and sooooo many failures along the way, which I feel is also important to share. At least the mistakes are still interesting. It’s a complex tool, greatly accelerating certain things like making panels and patterning, but it’s not like you push a button and stand back. It’s more like a scripted hand-machine dance, performing a sequence of haptic subroutines that each need to come off well, otherwise it snags, breaks, tangles, and/or literally falls apart. Thankfully, there were enough successes to keep my head held high going into the week ahead. These bits are prototypes for a collaboration I’m doing with @r.hesketh in the upcoming @ceramics_x_fiber exhibition during the NCECA conference in Detroit, March 25-28.

Hacked my knitting machine this weekend! So much gratitude to all the volunteer developers with All Yarns Are Beautiful who made this possible. #ayab Test file exploring pattern generation using layer summing, shaders, and overlays (terms borrowed from digital rendering techniques), mixed with structures borrowed from weaving (satin).

I found a trove of machine knitting pattern books online, and made this raglan sweater based on a British design from the 70’s, adding a zig-zag tuck stitch pattern, recalculating the gauge, and slightly modifying the sleeve shape/neckline. Aside from hats, this is my first homemade piece of clothing! Not flawless, but not too bad either. :) Singer Knitting Machines, Classics Series 7 booklet Knitking/Brother KH-965i + KR-850 8/2 unbleached cotton

Some binary gradient samples, kinda like pulse-width modulation and frequency modulation at the same time. Almost done with this warp.

I stepped away from this sample a bit ago, but came back to finish it up this morning. The warp tension has gotten a bit wonky as I’ve approached the end of this taquete setup, so I’ve had my share of broken threads to mend, but I’m glad that I kept on going because I’ve learned a lot in the process. Here, I got into using three colors and even a clasped-weft variation. Technically, this would be face-down still, but I think the top part is going to look better this way… final orientation is TBD.
