In "Paper Boats," I grapple with the loss of my father, who had a talent for turning anything into a paper boat. To honor his memory, I embarked on a journey to various bodies of water, crafting paper boats and setting them adrift. Initially, making this film was a cathartic response to my grief. However, as I watched each boat sail away, I experienced a profound realization: just as my father could transform the mundane into beauty, his passing represents a transformative journey, much like a simple piece of paper becoming a symbol of hope and adventure. For Gilberto Marquez, making hats isn’t just about style or tradition, it’s personal. The Chicano hatmaker has built his practice around honoring Mexican culture and connecting communities across the diaspora, one handmade piece at a time. In a moment when Mexican identity is constantly being debated and distorted, Marquez’s hats offer something quieter and more grounded - a story told through craft. Best friends and co-owners Natasha Price and Tatiana Ettensberger of @wildes.la in Los Feliz, a restaurant that reflects the growing popularity of the all-day café. As restaurants face increasing pressures, many are extending service across the day by operating with two distinct menus and identities - brunch, pastries, and coffee in the daytime, followed by a different dinner experience at night. Wilde’s moves seamlessly between both, shifting from bright and casual to warm and intimate after dark. I had a great time photographing the space and the food. The marvelous Toni Basil for The Guardian. Literally one of the funnest shoots I've had in a while and glad to wrap the year with this one. At 82, Toni is a force: dancing circles around everyone, fueled by a lifetime of movement and community. “Dance is my drug of choice,” she says. If you only know her from "Hey Mickey", that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Long before the hit, Toni was everywhere: Viva Las Vegas, Easy Rider, Soul Train, and collaborating with legends from Bowie to Tina Turner. A true icon. @guardian

#NowPlaying a @latinousa episode 🎧 Tango usually evokes images of a very regal couple: a man in a suit and a woman in a tight red dress, embraced in sensual moves. But the reality of the quintessential Argentinian music genre is strikingly different. Tango, in fact, was born in the brothels and dance halls of Buenos Aires’ lower cast and is rooted in Argentina’s African and queer subcultures. In this episode we’ll take you on a journey through tango’s history. It was first condemned by the elites and the Catholic church, threatened by the worldwide phenomenon of rock n’ roll, and buried by Argentina’s last military dictatorship. But then, in the 1980s and 1990s, it saw a revival. More recently, it’s being reclaimed by the very marginalized communities that first embraced it. Listen now at the link in bio. 🔗 #Argentina #tango #queer #africanroots
