Ep 17: Humor as a Spiritual Practice: Healing What Logic Can’t | Barbara Ann Michaels 6♣️ / 10♣️
In this playful and insightful episode, performance artist, keynote speaker, and HumorVille founder Barbara Ann Michaels joins us to explore humor as a sacred practice and why play may be one of the most spiritual acts there is. Through the lens of her 6♣️ / 10♣️ cards, we discuss creativity, failure, aging into self-trust, and how humor and shared meaning can help us reconnect with ourselves and each other.

Every Woman Biennial is the largest all women and non-binary art show in the USA. I’m delighted to be curated into with #IVote4U and to have performed at the opening day alongside other bold and bright artists.
See the link to the article in AM New York.
Celebrating being curated into the Every Woman Biennial in NYC this weekend! I’ll be performing #IVote4U between 1 and 6 on Sunday March 8 - roving and voting you President of what YOU care about! Congratulations to all the artists and organizers!
Last weekend we gathered in a monastery with a group of 10 strangers.
What unfolded there was even more magical than we expected.
The retreat was intended to be a place of transformation, through serious and playful games and events.
We experienced a perfect mix of deep conversations, laughter, tears and connection.
We shared ourselves fully, and were received, which in my opinion is one of the most healing things in existence.
Ceremonies were balanced with silliness that came up on the spot. I experienced the most joy in ages when on Saturday evening we played a game of sardines (reversed hide and seek where one hides, and the rest has to search and join when they find the hider).
Having the whole monastery to ourselves, this resulted in 10 adults, giggling like little kids.
For me, that's the essence of how I want to live. Meaningful moments, guiding each other forward on a journey whilst having a shitload of fun and silliness in the process. Isn't that the purpose of life?!
It truly amazes me how easy people start thriving when a space like this is created and held. How naturally people thrive when we create an environment that fits how we as human beings function.
When away from all the pressure and "need to do" of ordinary life, people's true selves emerge.
I like to tell myself that people had a glimpse of how light and joyful life can be, when living on your own terms and in alignment with your true self. And have the tools to integrate that into their real life.
To be continued for sure!!!
This graphic design feels a little half baked, wouldn’t you say?
A space to bring your half-finished projects
Engage the power of collective whimsy to break through stasis and shame
Just come, you’ll probably have fun!!

The half-baked idea that started it all.
In December I posted this picture of a half-written note to a mysterious Michelle and asked people to weigh in on who I was writing to, and why (consensus was: former First Lady Michelle Obama). It was a silly little internet moment, but the ease with which a half-formed idea became a full-fledged something with a life of its own prompted me to wonder: what if there were a space dedicated to honoring and elevating our half-finished projects by engaging collective creativity and whimsy to move them forward?
Next Tuesday night @jesterofthepeace and I are facilitating the first iteration of The Half-Baked Brigade at @fabriksocialspaces in Dumbo, as a combined @thatsinteresting.studio and @townofhumorville experience! 🐣
Bring a project you love but haven’t finished.
First we’ll explore half-ness and incompletion through a guided creative exercise.
Then we’ll swap projects, allowing someone else to work on our idea while we work on theirs.
Then we’ll get our own project back and see what the fresh mind of a partner unleashes in our own imagining of this project’s future.
We can’t wait to see what happens!! Link to RSVP in bio.
TOMORROW ✨ Sabbath Queen / Play
Adar energy is here…joyful, mischievous, and a little topsy-turvy. As #Purim and the full moon approach, we’re turning liturgy inside out, where PLAY BECOMES PRAYER and the unexpected leads the way.
Join us for an evening of music, poetry, and connection with @bshatteredbfree , Shira Kline, @jesterofthepeace , @arilmonts , and @shirazetteshebeatstinnin , plus special guests from @svarayeshiva .
💫 We’re especially honored to celebrate our beloved spiritual leader @shirakline , who will be recognized by SVARA at their upcoming Shaping Tradition event (3/26). Her leadership continues to open doors for bold, inclusive Jewish life—and we can’t wait to celebrate her together.
Come pray, play, and wish Shira a huge Mazal Tov 💛

Oh yes! I love the WXO with a mad passion. People have such little ego and so much heart. So much craft and so much to offer each other. My roundtable is on solo producers, like me with HumorVille, the tourist attraction for your heart in Brooklyn, NY. My session gathers together other solo creators to have some unity in our community. I’m honored to be on the short list and the voting period is short - til Monday 2/23! Thanks for voting for me!
As we pause for Presidents Day and enter the month of Adar — our tradition’s month of joy — we’re reflecting on leadership, laughter, and how we choose to show up in the world.
Earlier this month, the Lab/Shul team visited Humorville, a playful pop-up town centered on humor, wellness, and connection. What started as team bonding became something deeper: we each voted ourselves “President” of what we want more of in our lives — Nature, Ease, and Clarity.
Not loving the president you currently have? Become the president of what you want more of… Come PLAY with us this Friday at Sabbath Queen/PLAY! We’re excited to welcome @jesterofthepeace for a joyful experience of being seen, heard, and celebrated. We’ll also be joined by @layniesolomxn@svarayeshiva for a special text study on play and joy as we celebrate @shirakline and her upcoming honor.
Come ready for laughter, connection, and a little more joy. ✨
