Ink and hake brush experimenting. These are sort of a studio warm up for me, just push the ink and see where it goes, break the drawing with each new step so there is no goal of completion, make the marks without overthinking, then once you stop, tear it all to bits and maybe those bits become something else down the line, or not at all. šŸ’™

From practicing Internal Family Systems therapy or ā€œparts workā€ I find it helps me to visualize the spaces these internal mental parts inhabit and give them a home, so some recent pieces are sketches of those spaces, an internal psyche architecture. In parts work you’re searching for characters or ā€œpartsā€ you may have created in your consciousness that have served as protectors, mangers, critics, in order to survive or cope. Mine often take on the shape of structure and spaces so thats part of what I’m exploring with making images of environments. It feels odd to be talking about the ideas involved in some of my work but I guess I’m in a place where I want to communicate them with people, even though it makes me deeply uncomfortable 🤪 ā€œInternal unitā€ Earthen plaster, pigments, wood 36x36ā€ 2026

Assemblage from a series of works made from gathered material in Vernon, Ca, a bizarre and entirely industrial city within Los Angeles, only 222 residents, lots of weird, a long history of corruption and pollution. I wander around Vernon a lot, it’s near my studio and it’s a place you can be very alone in if you go after 5pm or on a Sunday, I like that about it, it’s calm and reminds me of the LA I imagined as a kid watching the movie Repo Man, which I think every year becomes more of an influence on me. These parts mostly come from loading docks where oil and 18 wheelers make the markings for me. I try to do very little to them at all aside from assembling them together.

New Website just launched ā˜ļø after a few years of pulling my old one down, that old work feels like a period that is over and it took some time to figure out what to make and why but I’m happy to share all newer works here that feel more connected to who and where I am in life, in making, in learning and building and in trying to make sense of the world. Have a look if you have moment and please feel free to share šŸ’™ link is in the bio, xo jesse-brown.co
