I AM AN ALCOHOLIC.
Today is February 23rd and I am proudly celebrating 7 years alcohol free. That is two thousand five hundred fifty-seven days. An impossibility made possible. A hundred lifetimes to an alcoholic. A weight so heavy I no longer wished to carry. It starts with one day, then another, followed by one more, then you keep going again and again.
I spent many years thinking things would never get better and that quitting would be too hard, but it does get better. It’s still hard sometimes but it’s not as hard as you think. Talking to, or just listening to other people who have gone through similar experiences helps. There are meetings you can go to if you’re struggling with quitting. It will be uncomfortable at first but it gets better one day at a time. I didn’t choose to be an alcoholic but I can wake up every day and choose not to fall for it and I think that’s something I’m proud of today. If anyone else out there has also quit can you please do me a huge favour and leave a comment saying how long it has been? I would love to let anyone reading this who is struggling right now know that they aren’t alone.
