I had a wonderful birthday. Caught the sunrise, had a Muni ride, Michaela got us Tartine (the best quiche… maybe ever) and some cozy courage the cowardly dog slippers that Pickle and Cheese are ironically scared of. Today we Celebrated with some diner breakfast with great friends and family. No pictures taken. Thank you for the birthday wishes. I feel very loved!

Leaving Kawaguchiko. Every picture I took of Mt. Fuji just didn’t capture how awesome it was, so I stopped. We were blessed with two perfectly clear days where the mountain was fully visible. While walking I would forget it was there, and then I would look back in its direction only to be awe struck again. This happened repeatedly. At the Ryokan we stayed at one of their out door baths looked straight toward Mt. Fuji. It was perfectly framed by bamboo and trees. After a bike ride by the lake, I rushed back to the hotel to catch this view before our last Keiseki dinner. It made me think of the power of simplicity. It made me appreciate Mt. Sneffles back in Ridgway, for it too is a jaw dropping monolith of nature that can hypnotize and make you forget about all the little troubles In your mind. Like staring at the ocean. Like staring at fire.

Our journey through Japan continues. We are in Kinosaki Onsen. The views are incredible: a mix of small mountains, a big ol river that spills into the ocean, bridges, storks, lanterns, crab. The public baths are pretty packed here throughout the day - a lot of local and foreign tourism. A mix of People enjoying shared silence, and an uncomfortable guy who was desperate to fill the air with idle conversation. I love the tradition of silence in Onsen culture. I’ve spent too many times at Orvis listening to mindless talk about what new skis someone is going to try, or loud conversation in saunas about septic tanks. Anyway… we also got some Mario party in on the train leaving Kyoto.

From the mountains of Gunma to the seaside city of Atami. I marvel every day how excellent the public transit system is. The streets and alley ways are more for people than cars. We stayed at Hotel New Akao last night, kind of last minute switch in our plans, and it has been a magnificent surprise. I’ve never looked at the ocean’s horizon in a more blissful way - sitting in silent reflection in an Onsen infinity pool listing to the waves crash below and the early morning sea birds.

Kusatsu is fantastic. The hot springs water is a gift and the people treat it as such. The Yubatake at the center of town is a work of natural art and beautiful human engineering. Each public onsen had its own vibe and strengths so it’s hard to compare them, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be Sainokawara park. The journey up there is beautiful - you walk along a path next to a gentle stream of hot water, trees, and footbaths. Then you get to bath in one of the best out door Onsens (Roten-Buro) where you can look at a big ol hillside with trees changing colors. Gusts of wind would send leaves flying across the sky.
