Five years ago, Yaxel Lendeborg didn’t even want to leave home for Arizona.
Now, he’s a national champion.
The journey from culture shock to college basketball’s biggest stage was powered by one person who never stopped believing: his mother.

“I immediately threw my phone and broke down”
For Michigan star and future draft pick, Yaxel Lendeborg, basketball has always been bigger than the game. It’s family, sacrifice, and the bond he shares with his mother who believed in him first, including through her cancer battle.

“Don’t be me.”
That’s what his father told him after being shot.
Jonah Coleman listened and turned that moment into a different future.
From Stockton to the NFL Draft, this is bigger than football.

Jason Crowe Jr. will take the floor tonight in the 2026 McDonald’s All American Game (9 PM ET on ESPN) as one of the nation’s top 24 players, continuing the legacy of Inglewood High greats like Paul Pierce, Reggie Theus, and Jason Hart.
Halfway through the season, Crowe Jr. broke the California career scoring record, adding another milestone to a historic run.
He did it a different way.
At Inglewood, there are no state-of-the-art facilities, just a program built on resourcefulness, where players and coaches make the most of what they have. Crowe Jr. chose to stay and grow within that.
Now, he’s headed to Missouri, with his father joining the program as an assistant coach, continuing a journey rooted in family, community, and purpose.

It’s been quite the year, for me, to see live music in 2025. From Esperanza Spalding and Lalah Hathaway at Strathmore in January; to Eryka Badu at Wolftrap in June; dozens of acts during the three-day North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam in July; Kendrick Lamar and SZA in Paris in July; Joss Stone and Lizz Wright in Oct.; Tank and the Bangas at the Blue Note (NY); Allen Stone at Anthem in November; bassist Ben Williams at The Hamilton (DC) I December. And many more local acts.
It’s been quite the year for travel: a 10 day trip through Columbia in May (Bogota, Medellin and Cartagena); and a European trip in July that included Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
And quite a year professionally with the release of the Kobe Bryant documentary (Eight on Eight) that I directed.
For 2026: I’m hoping to maintain good health so I can run this back. Wishing everyone a Happy New Year!

Family on deck: Amare (48) and Avery (53). Teammates on a NYC team (Creative Arts and Sports) that went undefeated last weekend on the adidas circuit in New Jersey. First exposure to circuit hoops. Proud of my nephew, Kareem Lewis who is surrounding his four hoopers with quality coaches.
What started as a joke… but grew legs of its own. Meet Josiah and Lamar Willis, a dad and a son duo on the Compton College football team.

Jelena Ostapenko’s words to Taylor Townsend sent shockwaves through tennis.
Naomi Osaka didn’t hold back: “It’s one of the worst things you can say to a Black player.”
And Coco Gauff has stepped up to defend Townsend’s character.
Over the weekend, Ostapenko issued an apology and Townsend, graceful as ever, accepted while calling for growth.
But do moments like this demand a bigger conversation in tennis?
Read about the exchange that sparked it all and how it could shape what comes next on Andscape.com in @jerrybembry ’s latest:
