Hu Ming paints women physically powerful and sexually uninhibited 🇨🇳
Born in Beijing, she joined the People’s Liberation Army at 15 in 1970 and served for over two decades. She started out painting propaganda posters, then worked in an army hospital, then a library, where she secretly studied a book of Michelangelo’s figurative drawings. Time in morgues during her nursing training added to her grasp of anatomy. She later studied at the Tianjin Art Academy, graduating in 1983, and was assigned to the PLA’s film unit.
After Tiananmen in 1990, she left China for New Zealand, then moved to Sydney in 1999, where she still works today. Her subjects, drawn from the women she served with, are lean, tough, sexually liberated and often funny, pushing against the stereotypes usually attached to Chinese women.
