“In the Forest of Himmapan” marks the first solo exhibition in Thailand by South Korean artist Kim Doyeon. The works were developed during her three-month residency in Chiang Mai as part of the
@sacresidency programme, in collaboration with
@a_lounge_contemporary , Seoul.
Living in Thailand, the artist gradually absorbed local culture, mythology, and the quiet traces of stories embedded in everyday life. Rather than retelling myths in a linear way, she lingered with forms, rhythms, and presences—allowing time, repetition, and attentive observation to shape her perception. These experiences unfold through painting and printmaking as an imagined landscape that emerges slowly.
In this exhibition, Himmapan is not a physical place but a threshold space—where humans and non-humans, this world and the next, myth and lived reality continuously overlap. It is an open borderland, a forest of in-betweenness, where identities remain fluid and forms are always in motion.
Beings appear, dissolve, and reappear: humans and birds, animals and deities, water and land, bodies and language. They are not fixed as symbols or gathered into a single narrative, but remain suspended—momentary, layered, and open to interpretation.
Through long periods of copying and redrawing Himmapan figures found in Thai temple art, the artist approaches drawing as a form of listening—a quiet conversation with time and memory. In her more recent works, these presences drift into her everyday life in Chiang Mai, appearing and fading without being summoned, much like Himmapan itself.
“In the Forest of Himmapan” is not a complete story, but a record of passing through—a contemplative archive of encounters with people, animals, light, and vegetation. It opens a space where identity may briefly dissolve, allowing a quieter awareness of existence to emerge.
