What a special recognition from the Circus Historical Society just in time for the one year anniversary of the publication of “An international circus affair: How a Nanjing acrobat in San Francisco changed American circus forever.”
The Stuart Thayer Prize is an award that recognizes the highest quality research, scholarship, and writing about American circus history. Our book was a finalist for the 2025 award.
Thanks to @jeffraz18 for inviting me to be a part of this incredible project with @ori.quesada and @devinistyping capturing the story of Master Lu Yi and his influence on San Francisco circus community.
If you haven’t read it yet now is the time! @modernvaudevillepress

Representation matters — and we are offering full-tuition scholarships to 2 students who are Black, indigenous or a person of color to our Intro to Medical Clowning Intensive this July.
This 5-day intensive will be an investigation of Clown buoyancy, vulnerability and humor help in places of healing. It is co-led by Michelle Matlock (Cirque du Soleil, Circus Amok, and Dell’Arte Faculty), Jeff Raz (Founder, Medical Clowning Project) and Julie Douglas (Faculty and Head of Arts Engagement, Dell’Arte). The course is designed for those with some experience in areas such as clown, therapeutic care, or teaching artistry.
Expect a skills-based focus with exercises around presence, listening and awareness. Participants will learn about how clowns engage in various care facilities (such as nursing homes and hospitals), as well as receive instruction about practicing emotional hygiene and self-care in this work.
To Apply for the Scholarship: complete our brief course application form and note your eligibility and interest in the last questions. LINK IN BIO / visit dellarte.com
