Lately, ever time I go to a demonstration regarding the war(s), or about ice(ss), or about the building of concentration camps in the US, theres hardly anyone in attendance. Announce a free rave and thousands show up. Don't get me wrong, I think it's awesome if anybody can pull off free music in public. I just can't imagine assembling thousands of people and not talking to them about Iran, Trump, Fascism, ICE, etc.
I could really blame bands/djs, cuz it's the giant labels that sort through all the house/rave music and select and promote the non-political artists, they sort through all the punk/metal and select and promote the non-political bands, they sort through all the brilliant hip hop and select and promote the most ego/centric shit to promote.
Again, I love all of the freak shows in the bay area, I just wish we would show up when it becomes necessary claim and wield our power.
I know it's scarry but do you really want to go to your grave having been a servant to your employers/landlords/police/government?
I just found out that california now has 52% THC, apperantly god tried it out and when they went to strike down Trump they were a little too high and hit Rudy instead. Give it a couple of days and trump will be out of iffice.
Jeff Ott has always written heartfelt political songs. He co-founded Crimpshrine in 1982 alongside Aaron Cometbus, Jesse Michaels, later Pete Rypins and Paul Curran. When Crimpshrine dissolved in 1989, the band Fifteen rose from the ashes, tackling homelessness, addiction, and civil rights. People’s Park and Gilman and other activist spaces influence Jeff’s lyrics. Now in 2026 he plays in the band Dollar Store.
