For @jeffolsonart , tradition lives in questions, not in style. When he looks at painters like Caravaggio, Van Gogh, or Guston, he isnât interested in copying what they did, but in understanding what they were searching for. How light transforms a subject. When paint stops being paint and becomes something more.
Acrylic allows Jeff to continue that inquiry in a contemporary way. For him, acrylic isnât a break from tradition. Itâs a continuation, flexible enough to hold centuries of thinking about paint. It carries the ability to glaze, stain, and build, while remaining fast and responsive enough to keep the process intuitive and physical. His paintings grow through action rather than planning, shaped by movement, revision, and the willingness to let the material push back.
In this way, tradition becomes something active rather than fixed. A living conversation between past and present, held together by curiosity, process, and the simple act of painting. A fresh take on tradition. đ¨

Over the holiday I took a break from my regular studio practice and did this small painting (11x14in) inspired by a work by Paul Evans, a well known UK landscape painter. My wife Kelly found the image online, and I was struck by its bold contrasting complimentary colors.
Here you can see me getting started with the reference image. I limited myself to using the palette knife for most of the painting. In the finished piece you can see that along with the textures, I enjoyed creating a few specific details similar to the original.
Both as a student and now working artist, I always have found both pleasure and learning by working from other artists paintings. Its a practice that goes back centuries, copying masterworks, and it can be a great way expand your painting vocabulary:) #amsterdamacrylics #paulevansartist #winterlandscapeâď¸ #acrylicpainting
