For the past few years, my documentary students and I have been quietly at work.

In a small Iowa town, something extraordinary is simmering. Kamal’s is a feature-length documentary about the food, story, family and community of Chef Kamal Hammouda and Laura Fendt of Relish Grinnell.
It’s where cultures meet, stories are shared, and strangers gather at the same table. A Muslim chef and his devout Catholic wife build a life, a family, and a community through food. Blending Middle Eastern tradition with the fields and farms of the Midwest, his dishes become bridges in a town navigating change.
Every frame. Every recipe. Made with collaboration, care, and love. Take a seat. Lean in. Taste the story. This is just the beginning.
