Synopsis:
The Hospitable Gaze distills two decades of ethnographic research in Sfakia, examining photographic practices and exploring concepts of locality, hostility, and hospitality in relation to tourism, memories of the German occupation, and the experience of tradition. It also delves into the ethnographic encounter itself, rendered through the materiality of the varied video footage featured in the film.
With my warmest gratitude to the Sfakian protagonists for their trust and to so many people (acknowledged in the titles) for their conversations, guidance and feedback.
