Two years later, we finally conquered the Rothrock Rambler from bikepacking.com! After cutting our attempt short last time, Les and I returned to complete this stunning 110-mile PA route. This time, we upgraded to a “tiny home” basecamp at Hartman Center Campground in Milroy; a game-changer for recovery over hauling full camping gear(Also the perfect home base for day rides in this area).
Highlights:
* Day 1: Parked for free at McAlvey’s Fort/Kepler Rd trail lot then biked to our tiny home.
* Day 2: Back to the car, with a mandatory stop at The Frozen Spoon!
* The Views: Spectacular overlooks, perfect forest gravel, adorable farm animals, and a very well-timed shelter break at Colyer Lake.
* The Challenge: 10 miles of fresh, deep gravel on Brady Road (bone-shattering) & numerous punchy climbs.
* The Weather: A little rain meant slow riding, but kept us cool and the bugs at bay.
* Recovery: Hot tub sessions daily = pure bliss.
I love camping but really appreciate a good night sleep and full recovery. So happy to check this one off the list.
