OutSmart Archives!
New addition to my site. A two-year project!
/outsmart.html
This section was in a way a gift to me. I am associated with the Invisible Histories Project. While I have long had in my own Archives every issue, the task of digitizing them was just too daunting, Hey, OutSmart is over 30 years old! But I still wished for this history to be available online. Of course all this is with the blessings of OutSmart.
At an IHP conference in 2023, in Charlotte, the founders mentioned that they had some grant money available for scanning and asked if I wanted this work done. Of course! So I shipped five heavy boxes (22 years) to Birmingham. It took two years for it to be slipped into their workload and now is finally done. I am VERY pleased for this vital part of our history to be available online.
Just had to buy more space on my server!
went from 300 to 400 GB!
Of course that's not free, if you want to donate, that can be done on any of my home pages.

The Evolution of a Book Cover...
First, the photo...taken May 1981 in L.A. by an adorable young man (Michael MacKay) I was hanging around with. Taken at Frank Lloyd Wright's Hollyhock House)
Then, (40 years later) commissioned artist friend Scott Swoveland to do a rendition of it.
Next, sent to my publisher (Wyatt Doyle, of New Texture) who thought of the idea of cropping it...just right.
And finally, complete...

Very Cool, for Pride the Houston Chronicle interviewed me about my websites (and even cooler, They sought me out)
/culture/article/houston-texas-lgbtq-history-20397900.php
A lengthy article.
The writer even mentioned My Book...:)

New Houston Art Installation, by Angel Albarran, have not seen it in person yet, but photos look great.....at Bagby & W Gray, across from the CVS. Yay Pride Month!
Honored to be among those the artist picked, including Bryan Hlavinka, Ray Hill, (I'm in the D), Phyllis Frye, Larry Bagneris and Annise Parker.
.
This is cool, Claire Sewell just sent me a photo of my book as part of the Fondren Library Pride Month Display....yeah, and the "1981" just draws you in.

The JD Doyle Archives......LOVES donations...
....and I just got this week a terrific one. A guy in a north suburb of Houston had some albums to donate, and contacted me. We had lunch on Thursday and I was floored by what he gave me.
I asked him how he found me, as he said he's not on Facebook, and he just googled for Houston archives and found "JD Doyle" and googled me and found a LOT more....yes, I try to be visible.
Turns out in the 80s/90s he had been involved in several Houston groups....Like Queer Nation, Q Patrol, Gay Fathers, Pride, Caucus, etc.....and had albums (a stack 12 inches high) of memorabilia, flyers, photos, programs, etc etc....all beautifully kept.
This is a Treasure Trove, and it will take me a while to get the contents on my site, but that will be a labor of love.
So, yes, if y'all have our history tucked away in storage, please consider getting them to my Archives, where online I try to make our lives visible.
