A few atmospheric shots from the recent 83rd Goodwood members meeting. Early in the morning there is plenty of atmosphere in the paddock and around the circuit. What better way to capture the morning light, the soft muted colours and a gentle start to what will be a frantic day’s motor racing, than with a film camera. We shoot with digital cameras nowadays and it’s a refreshing change to shoot on film, emphasising the craft of photography and concentrating our creative expression into a few images. It’s a discipline I relish. These images were shot on Cine Still 400D film using a Canon New F-1 from the early 1980s. It amazes me that we used to shoot film all the time and the instant immediacy of digital image capture was science-fiction back then. A motorsport event that celebrates the 70s, 80s and 90s is the perfect event to capture on film. This Cine Still 400D film looks more like film stock than I remember; it has a warm and dare I say cinematic quality. Hence the name I guess: I love the muted colours. There is pleasing grain yet a reasonable level of detail.   1. Deck chairs. First thing in the morning: this was probably 7:15 in the morning. I love the way the light plays through the canvas of the deck chairs, especially as the members meeting opens up this area of the circuit for viewing.   2. Art Deco building. This film handles the contrast in the lighting in such a delightful way. The art deco curves and highlights of the building contrast nicely with the soft greens of the trees. This must’ve been early because we only have one or two people milling about in the background.   3. Blossom. The collecting area in full swing and it’s always a good idea to step back and appreciate the surroundings. The prettiness of the blossom contrast nicely with the frantic activity going on beneath the leaves in the collecting area.   4. Sundown. Usually, film has a dynamic range of about 1 to 2 stops, however in this shot there’s an intriguing hint of shadow detail that belies the high contrast lighting from the setting.   Tell me what you think in the comments. #goodwood #83mm #filmphotography #contrejour #goldenhour

Night photo from the 83rd members meeting recently. This is the Lanzante 95-59 three seater. I do think the central driving position is a great idea, would work on a GT car designed for nipping over to France for a croissant or two. #lanzante #bespoke #83mm #goodwood

If you like tulips, this is an amazing place. Never seen so many blooms! If you get the chance, just go. We were very lucky, the light and the weather were brilliant, and going on King’s Day actually helped as most of the locals were out partying. Jaguar E-types at blue hour. Luckily one of the owners moved their car back to form a neat line. Such a pretty car and the race was stylish and fast. Jenson Button doing what he does best jumping from one car to a completely different one. Muscle memory like us with cameras. #jaguaretype #paddock #goodwood #83mm

Although the white Mercedes wears the winner wreath, it’s the huge FIAT S76 that wins affection. What a beast! #fiats76 #goodwoodmembersmeeting #83mm #historicracing #nightphotography

More evening paddock work. The Edwardian racers are such fun, exciting racing this year. Reminds me of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. #83mm #goodwood #historicmotorsport #nightphotography

More evening Ferrari history; the red Alfa on the left is the very car Enzo Ferrari raced in the 1920s before setting up his own race team and car factory. The rest as they say, is history. A lot of history. #enzoferrari #historicmotorracing #alfaromeo #motorsport

As the sun set, we headed into the paddock to shoot a different angle of the static display cars. This is Lauda’s Ferrari 312T from 1975. #paddock #bluehour #83mm #goodwood #lauda
