Is there an AI bubble? Are we all going to be out of jobs soon? Is the film industry finished?
As a freelance video editor, I hear these questions constantly. The truth is that on my last three jobs, I used AI in one form or another. For example:
• On a project with underexposed, grainy footage, we used Topaz to upscale and restore quality.
• For a TV show pitch, an actor could not make it to set, so with his permission we recreated his moments using his social media photos and AI.
• On a branded campaign, we needed additional moments for a mosaic transition effect. Since the production team had not captured that footage, we recreated it with AI, which saved the project.
AI is not going anywhere. While it may replace some roles, most applications will still require human creativity and judgment.
As I have been building an AI reel, I realized it forces me to think far beyond traditional editing. I need to consider lighting, mood, actors, objects, and camera movement. These are decisions that normally belong to a DP or director, but AI tools require me to step into those roles. It has pushed me to evolve not only as an editor but as a filmmaker.
Here is my latest AI video, created with
@_mocosa and
@gcolon2329 This Jaguar ad was made with ChatGPT, Midjourney, Veo3, Kling, and Higgsfield. It has been exciting to experiment with these tools, and I am looking forward to integrating them more deeply into my professional workflow.
Btw, there is only one shot in this video that is not AI. Can you guess which one?
