Special thanks to The Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, TX for giving this sound piece a new site. Originally installed at the Philip Johnson Glasshouse in 2018, works like this often remain archived, an ephemeral aspect of the work. Here it is transformed by location. I am honored and grateful. #blantonmuseum @blantonmuseum@cole.akers
Mary Lovelace O’Neal 1942-2026 🖤
The losses of late are palpable and legacies resonate. She was a Skowhegan Alumni, Howard University, Columbia University graduate and unique voice in the Black Arts Movement. I am grateful for the path she created and honored to have contributed a text to her current exhibition at @vmfamuseum@casseloliver “When I think about abstractions a field of listening, O’Neal is working within a frequency that understands color as vibration and surface as duration “ JcJ —- “A dynamic force in American painting since the 1960s, Mary Lovelace O’Neal developed a singular visual language that is acutely personal and profoundly political. Drawing on a broad range of influences—from Minimalism to Abstract Expressionism—Lovelace O’Neal’s practice is at once worldly, parsing social themes of race and gender, and philosophical, fully immersed in conceptual and metaphysical investigations of joy, exuberance, nature, and the sublime.” —Boeskey Gallery

Melvin Edwards (1937–2026) rest in power The light he shined was bright, his work fearless. He was my professor at Rutgers where I was the only African American student in my class. I cherished our studio visits, his truth bombs, encouragement and energy. He was tenacious and inspiring: “Melvin believed that abstraction could bear the full weight of history—and spent more than six decades demonstrating, with quiet rigor, that it could. Working in welded steel, he built a body of work that is at once an account of the African diaspora and a formal investigation of what sculpture can do: a sustained meditation on violence and beauty, rupture and continuity, and memory and hope.” #melvinedwardsartist 🖤

✨randomly selected 2025 moments ✨I am grateful… for the unbelievable projects last year. Grateful for the vulnerability, risk and courage it took, and the lessons it gave in return. I’m not accustomed to working with big teams, the support and kindness still resonates in my spirit. I’m still bad at instagram, I write too much, posted lots from institutions as default….All to say Thank you to: @alexandergrayassociates@pulitzerarts@rose_cestlavie@intcontemporary@metlivearts@davidcbreslin@cellisita@takealukearound@10grandpress@glennligon and countless others for being in my life. Now back to the woods.
Preorders are now open for "Jennie C. Jones: A Line When Broken Begins Again," our catalogue featuring Jennie C. Jones’s current exhibitions at the Pulitzer, arriving February 2026. Alongside new essays by senior curator Stephanie Weissberg and Jones, the publication brings together Jones’s writings on several artists included in "Other Octaves."
Richly illustrated with installation views and images of dozens of paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from both exhibitions, this catalogue offers an in-depth look at Jones’s practice. Order your copy now at the link in our bio! 📚
