During Holy week, my mind always returns to the music of Bach’s St John Passion, a piece I have had a long history with going bach to my first experience in the conducting masterclass at the Oregon Bach Festival with the beloved Helmuth Rilling.
This aria with chorus “Eilt, ihr angefocht’nen Seelen” is one of my favorite movements. Bach paints the meaning of the text “Hurry, you tempted souls” with melismatic layers for the bass soloist and strings. The chorus interjects the question “Wohin?” (Where?) in sets of three, timed with hemiola entrances that are some of the trickiest for the chorus in the whole work. This “Wohin?” hemiola is echoed elsewhere in the string polyphony - It’s melodic angularity infusing the music with Bach’s “cross motifs” symbolizing Christ’s passion on the hill of Golgotha and the salvation that is to come on Easter.
This performance with baritone Joshua Jeremiah @jbjcurly and @resonanceworks from 2019 in the historic Heinz Memorial Chapel @heinzchapel is one of my favorite musical memories. The entire performance is available to watch on the ResWorks website here: /st-john-passion
Introducing the men of VANESSA ❤️🔥
@myfreddieballentine , a Grammy Award winner known for his “mesmerizing power” (Seen and Heard International), makes his Heartbeat debut as Anatol. This season, Freddie returned to the Metropolitan Opera as Sportin’ Life in Porgy & Bess—a role in which he “stole every scene he was in” (Bachtrack)—and makes his role debut as Max in Le Freischütz with the American Symphony Orchestra at Carnegie Hall.
@jbjcurly returns to VANESSA with his “show-stealing” (The Washington Post) portrayal of the Doctor, full of “theatrical specificity and rhythmic vitality” (Seen and Heard International). Later this summer, he sings Horace Tabor in Opera North’s production of The Ballad of Baby Doe, then returns once again to Hawai‘i Opera Theatre in the fall as Jack Torrance in The Shining.

🎭 Joshua Jeremiah Joins Carmen as the Dashing Escamillo! 🎭
Get ready to cheer “Toréador, en garde!” - baritone @jbjcurly is stepping into the ring as the charismatic bullfighter Escamillo in Toledo Opera’s upcoming production of Carmen, and the excitement is palpable.
Described by the New York Times as “rich-voiced” and praised for his “warmly appealing, burnished baritone” (Opera Today), Joshua brings vocal power and dramatic flair to every role he inhabits. Toledo audiences will remember his captivating turn as Tateh in Ragtime - and this October, he returns to command the stage once more, this time as one of opera’s most
magnetic figures.
From Wagner to Puccini to new works, Joshua’s range and artistry have earned him acclaim across the country. In the 2024-25 season alone, he originated the role of Niles in the world premiere of Sensorium Ex with Beth Morrison Projects, performed in Carmina Burana with the Virginia Symphony, and returned to Virginia Opera as Alberich in Siegfried. His resume
boasts appearances with Seattle Opera, Hawaii Opera Theater, Houston Grand Opera, Portland Opera, and many more.
Joshua infuses each character he inhabits with humanity and gravitas. As Escamillo, expect nothing less than a bold, thrilling performance that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Happy World Opera Day!!
I really love my job. The ability to share art, music, theater, and essentially my emotional life with people is an incredible gift, and I'm so thankful that I get to do it. I am also very thankful for the team over at @uiatalent who help make it all possible. ❤️❤️
Instead of sharing a bunch of awesome looking production photos, here are some in costume selfies from shows and events over the past year.
I'm happy to label each character/show, but I feel like you all should guess... poorly, perhaps?
