Today is my birthday. It’s been a challenging year. Where many things that meant something to me were lost. I think everything we love is precious, precisely because it’s impermanent. The trick is valuing it while we have it.
One of my favorite pieces by a poet isn’t a poem at all. It’s the eighth letter of Rilke’s Letters To a Young Poet. The more often quoted section is this one:
“How can we forget those old myths that are at the beginnings of all peoples—the myths about dragons, which at the last moment turn into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses, who are only waiting to see us, at once, beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything frightening is, at its bottom, something helpless, that wants help from us.”
But I always liked the next passage more:
“And so you must not fear, if a grief rises up before you greater than any you have ever seen. If an uneasiness, like light and cloud-shadows, passes over your hands and over all you do. You must think that something is happening with you. That life has not forgotten you. That it holds you in its hands, and it will not let you fall.”
THEN, of course, there’s the old Klingon proverb, “What doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger.” Wait…that’s not right. Old Cimmerian proverb?
Anyway, thank you for the well wishes. ❤️ We aren’t, any of us, going to fall…
Goodnight, gentle soul… You were such a good friend, such an assuring presence, you brought nothing but light. This hurts a lot, but I’d do it all again.
It has been "a long road, unforeseen" to get here... So much has happened in my life during the production of this season, but this show is a labor of love, not just for me, I think, but for everyone who works on it. It has always been a polestar, a singular thing that always recenters me. Excited for this, soon, to be out and in the world. More thanks for the season are coming, but for this episode, I'm beyond grateful to @themichaelmau@therealchadmorgan@mustaphaslack@jdcerna@milaisabelaofficial@danijopayne@michelleacampbell
