Hunting Styles: How to Find the Right Approach for Your Goals with @jbarklow Most hunters never stop to think about their hunting style. They book whatever tag they can draw, copy what their buddies are doing, then wonder why some hunts leave them satisfied and others leave them frustrated. Hunting styles aren’t as clearly defined as they are in the climbing community, where climbers find their own tribe based on the type of climbing they pursue. But figuring out your personal hunting style helps you get the most satisfaction and enjoyment out of every season you spend in the field.

Planning for High Altitude You must factor in the time it will take to acclimate to higher altitudes above about 8500 feet. You can’t gut it out or try to impose your will in the mountain as it will always win. Everyone will be a bit different but on average it will take about 24 hours for every 1500’ above 8500’ or you risk altitude sickness that could develop into a life-threatening condition. #knowledgefromstorms

Train for Adversity Everyone makes mistakes outdoors, even the “Pros”. The difference is the folks who are experienced know how to adjust to the inevitable adversity of the backcountry. Train in realistic conditions and know multiple ways of doing things such as making a fire, pitching a tarp or navigating. We all seek to be competent and self reliant outdoors. Training for adversity will go a longs way towards achieving the goal. #knowledgefromstorms

My FAVORITE moment with @andystumpf212 right here. We were on a DIY together and I called a bull in. I was at bat after several days swapping 1st chair positions. The bull runs right in and stops behind a tree. I had my pin on him. I whisper over my shoulder "Andy you knows it's 9/11?" He instantly replies "F*k yeah I know." I replied with "This bull should be yours," within seconds the perfect arrow flew. HERE'S WHAT THAT MOMENT MEANS TO ME! Very proud of this guys venture through bowhunting and never tapping. Andy's new book DROWN PROOF is out today. Get a copy & support a friend who's earned some awesomeness in the world.

Primitive Signaling When heading into the backcountry don’t always assume you’ll have your cell phone or sat com device available to communicate. Be sure and back stop yourself with a few methods of primitive communication to signal partners on stalks and to mark your location if assistance or a rescue is required. #knowledgefromstorms #unchartedsupplyco #teameasties #montanaknifecompany

How to Load a Pack You want to make sure that once loaded your backpack feels like an extension of your body. This will not only make it more comfortable but also allow you to perform as you expect in rugged terrain. #knowledgefromstorms

Temperature Forecasting You need to pack for where you’re going not where you’re at. Factor in a 4 degree temp decrease for every 1000 feet of elevation increase. If it’s 40F and raining in the valley it’s very likely below freezing, 26F, and snowing at 9000 feet. This is a great planning tool for packing so you’re not caught off guard. #knowledgefromstorms
