We are happy to announce the participation of Sopheak Sam in the Sâmleng residency from April 22 to June 6.
During his time in Phnom Penh, Sopheak will develop a new body of work centered on the motif of snakeskin as a conceptual framework for transformation, renewal, and self-redefinition. Engaging textile traditions of pattern and ornamentation, his project explores the intersections of Khmer cosmologies, postwar histories, queerness, and migration.
Sopheak Sam is a Cambodian-American queer artist and former child refugee based in Lowell, MA, whose interdisciplinary practice spans painting, sculpture, video, textiles, bookmaking, and writing. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Kalm Village (Chiang Mai), the Minnesota Museum of American Art, and Ortega y Gasset Projects (Brooklyn). He is a recipient of the Artadia Award (Boston, 2025), a Mass Cultural Council Grant (2026), and a Fulbright Scholarship (Thailand, 2022–23).
It’s a wrap.
We’ve just completed our creation residency at Alliance Française de Bangkok, an important step in the journey of Coming Out of My Skin.
I feel deeply moved and also surprised by the way this text has evolved. It is very particular for me to accompany it in this form: at once stripped bare and inhabited, distanced and vulnerable.
My deepest thanks to Sasapin Siriwanij for embracing the challenge of staging this piece, and for bringing both delicacy and rigor to the process.
To Noom Sorawis Chinsangthip, thank you for your generosity and efficiency throughout. To Victor Goi-Modo, thank you for your kind eye and your steady presence. To Hugo Hamon, thank you for all your work behind the scenes.
Grateful to Alliance Française de Bangkok, Institut français du Cambodge, and all the people involved for their trust and accompaniment.
And thank you to everyone who came to this first sharing, and for the generosity with which you received the work.
Next step: the premiere in Phnom Penh at Institut français du Cambodge in early June.
Stay tuned.

Un immense merci au festival CinemAsio pour le Prix Diasporas attribué à La Langue de ma mère. Je suis très touché par cette reconnaissance et j’aurais tellement aimé être là en personne pour partager ce moment avec vous. Longue vie au festival !
A very warm thank you to CinemAsio for awarding the Diasporas Prize to La Langue de ma mère. I’m deeply touched by this recognition and I truly wish I could have been there in person to share this moment with you. Long live the festival!
Right after wrapping SEDA, I jumped straight into rehearsals for the stage adaptation of La Peau hors du placard, directed by Sasapin Siriwanij, assisted by Noom Sorawis — both of whom flew in from Thailand — with the participation of Vico Modo as well.
Four intense days of exploration and rediscovery, despite the exhaustion… and even falling sick along the way.
It feels meaningful to return to this text as a performer. It carries so much of my journey, and I feel grateful to hold it again, this time in such thoughtful and generous hands.
Thank you all for your care, your rigor, and your presence.
Thank you Cambodian Living Arts (CLA) and សិល្បៈត្រជាក់ភ្នែក Silapak Trotchaek Pneik // by YK Art House for welcoming our rehearsals.
Next step: a residency at the alliance francaise de Bangkok in April, before premiering in Phnom Penh in June at the Institut français du Cambodge.
Stay tuned.
