𝗙𝗥𝗘𝗘 𝗪𝗘𝗕𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗥 • 𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗡𝗢𝗪 | LINK IN BIO Since the rise of four-year jazz programs in American higher education, chord-scale theory and transcription have become central teaching approaches. While research has examined how these methods are built into curricula, less focus has been placed on how students experience them and what factors shape their learning. This study explores the environmental influences students perceive as most significant in their development as jazz musicians. Data was collected through a qualitative survey and semi-structured interviews with undergraduate jazz majors. Results show that student perspectives are shaped by three key areas: external factors (influential artists and educators), interpersonal factors (relationships with peers, faculty, and institutions), and intrapersonal factors (personal motivation, interests, and artistic identity). The interaction of these elements strongly impacts how students view the relevance of chord-scale theory and transcription. This paper discusses the implications of these findings and offers strategies to better support student growth and transition into professional musicianship. Plus a Q & A with the live audience. A descending melody; a steady beat; major is happy and minor is sad; chord progressions have tension and release. The Imaginal is a term coined by philosopher Henry Corbin to explain how the human imagination supports human perceptions. Metaphors, similes, analogies, and the like can be considered Imaginal ways in which we relate experiences to other things. Music is no different, especially in jazz. The history is replete with people describing improvisation as a “conversation,” or like “storytelling.” Even the word “swing” relates to a bodily experience. This webinar will explore literature about ways of knowing and thinking in terms of other things.
