A month ago, I hosted my Artist Talk onĀ Lavender and Ginger, and thanks to your support, I raised nearly $1,200. Since then, I’ve raised another $450, bringing me closer than I have ever been to making this research trip happen. To secure the trip, I now need to raise the remaining $650 by May 8 with a stretch goal of raising an additional total of $1,000. This covers:
• $700 for lodging
• $120 for phone service
• $100 for transportation throughout the island The stretch goal covers: • $150 for cat sitting and cat supplies while away
• $200 for food while aboard This is the final gap standing between me and this trip!! I’m traveling to Jamaica to present my graphic novel at the Caribbean Association Studies Conference, reconnect with artists and scholars I met through Caribbean Digital, and deepen research that directly informs the worldbuilding ofĀ Lavender and Ginger. Because the trip falls during Pride Month, I’ll also have the rare opportunity to engage queer community spaces and histories that often remain underground, while visiting places such as Moore Town and, if possible, Stacy Ann Chin’s Kindred on the Rock. This is an opportunity to learn from living archives, build relationships, and bring this narrative closer to life. If you’ve followed my work, you know I’ve been trying to make a research trip to Jamaica happen for some time, and this is the closest I’ve come. If this project resonates with you, I’d be honored if you would contribute toward this final $650 or share this fundraiser with someone who may want to support. Every contribution moves this work forward. Venmo:Ā @jazmynjamil Cash App $jazmynjamil Please contact me if you have an alternative way of giving! I’m also selling 11x14 limited edition signed prints for $40 through my website. If you want to by pass shipping cost, I’m happy to complete transaction through DMs or email. Last week we celebrated our 3rd year anniversary! In these 3 years I have only learned to love you more and more @jasminelynea_ . I get the chance to learn more about you. To grow with you. To encourage you towards your goals, wants, and dreams. You encourage everyone to follow their dreams because you believe that there is room for everyone at the table. You have a gift of seeing the bigger picture and that grounds your work and your relationships. Your love is patience, humorous, and intentional and because of your love I can feel confident in becoming my full self, take up space, and go after my dreams. Within the past 3 years I’ve learned that my favorite ā€œI love youā€s is at the end of the day. After a long day of exploring a museum, or walking around a neighborhood we aspire to live in, or eating pasta and sharing a belly laugh. Throughout the unpredictable waves of being an artist, I am blessed to be grounded in our everyday moments. Talking shit about the real house wives of Potomac. Debriefing the art we experience at a show or a movie. Rating the food we get at a restaurant as if we are professional chefs. I don’t want to take for granted the little things that makes us. We are each others biggest cheerleaders, supporters, motivators, ā€œit will get better-ersā€. I am honored to call you my partner, my friend, my lover. You support me and choose to love all of me each and every day. Loving you only makes me want to keep growing.

After days of finding the best travel deal and spending $800 later, I finally booked my ticket to Jamaica! I’m grateful that I no longer have to worry about the flight but I still have to take care of the lodging. Since the artist talk, I’ve raised an additional $150! I’m only $932 away from my goal to ensure that I can enjoy this conference and research trip stress free. If you want to still support and have means, I’m still receiving donations via Venmo (@jazmynjamil ) and I’m selling signed prints of my extend collage series, Quilted Archives. One of the pieces is already sold out! Follow the link in bio to check out and feel free to message me with any questions. . . .

An incredible artist talk last night! I’m very grateful to have so many people come out on a cold spring night to support and listen to me nerd out on my graphic novel. I felt vulnerable yet safe in showing all the research and inspo I used to create this work. Thank you for making me feel safe and for making my work feel importantšŸ’š Also thank you to everyone who have donated towards my travel cost to present at the Caribbean Studies Association conference. I am excited to announce that I was able to raise $1,118! That more than half of my travel budget!! I’m purchasing my flight TONIGHT!! It finally happening. I’m only $1,082 away from my goal. That money will cover not only my time and airbnb during the 4 day conference but will allow me to spend an additional 5 days to explore Jamaica. Securing financial support will ensure that I will have a place to sleep, the means to travel throughout the island, visit museums, pay honorariums to scholars and activist I would like to interview, and everything in between to build onto the storyline and world of Lavender and Ginger. If you still want to support and have the means, please consider donating via Venmo @ jazmynjamil. I’ll am able to mail your gifts to wherever you are! Donations Under $40: Thank you post card Donations $40-$100: Limited edition signed print Donations over $100: Limited edition signed print + chapter one manuscript Thank you to @plantandpeople for sponsoring the event, for allow me to use the space for free, and for crafting speciality drinks just for this event! Thank you to my partner @jasminelynea_ for jumping in to help last minute and for capturing the moment. And thank you @__originalcyn for honing down the table for me and helping me raise funds.

LAST CHANCE to grab your seat (and a possibly a limited edition print) for TOMORROW’S Lavender and Ginger artist talk tomorrow! Creating a graphic novel has been a long process and having the chance to share my process with community, fuels me. But because of ya’lls kind words and encouragement I now feel overjoyed and excited for tomorrowā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ So far I have raised 1/3 of my travel budget to present this in at the Caribbean Studies Association conference in Jamaica. If you can’t make it or live out of state but still want to support, please consider donating through eventbrite and I’ll mail your thank-you-gifts directly to you! Last night, I woke up from an urgent phone call from my mom. ā€œHelp me understand why you would post our family photos and lie that my mom ran an underground queer bar!ā€ She told me My mom doesn’t have an instagram. She began to explain to me that family members from Jamaica are sending her screenshots of my instagram. I have no idea who these family members are. They’ve never said hello to me but somehow they know my Instagram? I tried to explain to her that the main character and her storyline are both completely fictional. This isn’t grandma’s story. That wasn’t good enough. She responded with ā€œThis could be a legal matter and my family could sue you.ā€ It’s incredibly ironic that I made a post on how the main character longs for family and how I also long family yet this is the response i get from nameless family members. The biggest elephant in the room is that I’m queer even though I never came out to them. Being associated with me or my work is now a huge issue. I’m in a very tender space right now as I am once again reminded that I don’t really have family or support. I even considered canceling the artist talk and throwing away the book but I won’t let them take this story away from me. The post is deleted in respect of folks not wanting their face on social media. And to further elaborate the photos were used to mourn relationships I’ve never had the chance to build. Additionally, none of the people in the deleted post are queer or ever ran an underground queer bar. For healing purposes, here a series of chosen familyā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Celebrated the last year of my 20s!!! šŸ„³ā™“ļø I feel so grateful to have a three part surprise birthday thrown by my partner and close friends. I ate well, did an escape room, and saw one of my favorite artist perform. I’m really looking forward to a year of blossoming! Career-wise, love-wise, and friends-wise. I’m fortunate to have love ones who have supported me from near and far. I am constantly reminded that I am loved and wanted for who I am. Thank you to my partner @jasminelynea_ for loving me, for growing with me, for choosing each other everyday, and for always collaborating with my friends during times of celebration to remind me that I have family and I am loved. Thank you to my friends who helped planned out this birthday and making sure it was fun and unforgettable. I have no idea how much work and time you guys put in to this but I feel so blessed to be this loved and cared for. Thank you to my friends from far away. We stuck by each other all these years. Have seen all versions of each other and still choose show support and love even through the years of adulting. And thank you you to my friends in Philly who might have not been apart of this but every time we see each other it is filled with screams, encouragement, and genuine excitement. You guys remind me that I have community. Cheers to abundance and 29 šŸ„‚ *My birthday was last Thursday. Ya gurl is a pisces/aries cusp just in case the streets ask about me

I’ve been putting these flyers up around the city the past couple weeks and it’s been really sweet seeing them out in the wild. Lavender & Ginger is coming up soon and half the seats are already gone šŸ«¶šŸ¾ This artist talk is me sharing the process behind my graphic novel. The queer Caribbean histories, the research rabbit holes, accent projects, and how those stories turned into a speculative narrative. This talk is also helping me raise travel funds to bring this to the Caribbean Studies Association conference this summer. If you’ve been curious about the project or just want to come listen and be in community, there are still some seats left. Thank you to @plantandpeople for sponsoring and hosting and thank you @phillyblkpride for supporting this work. Ticket link in bio. . . . #graphicnovel #artisttalk #thingstodoinphilly #queercaribbean

I feel like I could endlessly edit this story and this is one of those moments. This is an intense scene that takes place in the first chapter and I wanted to honor the intensity without to triggering the reader. These pages are still in progress but I’m thinking of releasing the manuscript to the first chapter on my substack soon. What do you think? . . . #dolsie #lavenderandginger #graphicnovel #inprocess #digitalillustration
