✨ I grew up between English at school and Spanish at home. My parents hoped I’d grow up bilingual—but I didn’t take it seriously as a kid. Instead, bilingualism felt frustrating, sometimes even shameful around relatives. Even though I understood everything in Spanish, I didn’t always have the confidence to speak it. 📚While reading Tío Ricky Doesn’t Speak English by Maritere Bellas @latinaboomermom and illustrated y @jayrisart I saw myself in the main character, Enrique. I related to him so much! And I couldn’t help but think—if I had a book like this growing up, bilingualism might have felt like a superpower sooner. ✨If I had seen bilingualism reflected like this as a kid in a picture book maybe I would’ve felt more confident in my voice. If no one highlights bilingualism (other than your parents) as something valuable, it’s easy (as a kid) to internalize the opposite: that it’s a barrier, something to hide, or something that makes you “different “ in a negative way. ✨It took me many years to relearn and today I still struggle with some words, but I am much more confident and proud!❤️😊 💕A HUGE THANK YOU to @latinaboomermom for sharing this story!
