It was actress Bette Davis that first uttered the phrase āOld age is not for sissies!ā. Iāve certainly found that to be true the last few years. I had an unprecedented run of great health that lasted nearly 60 of my years with just a couple of minor injuries, and never saw a hospital, ambulance, no medications, and solid level of fitness and mobility.
Just a bit before my 60th birthday, the wheels started coming off. In the ensuing 2 1/2 years Iāve had things happen to me, some of which were my own doing (broken collarbone, broken neck) and some of which were just genetics (I wonāt get into the details). My life is now busy with lots of doctor visits (pulmonologists, cardiologists, hepatologists, neurologists), new medications, nervously using AI to diagnose anything that feels āoffā, and obsessing about my eventual mortality, whenever that may come.
Through it all with
@vickireale by my side, Iām managing the cards that have been dealt to me healthwise grateful that my life thus far has been full of adventure, love, life and experiences that have enriched my 62 years beyond measure.
No, Iām not dying (as far as I know), just baring my soul to the social media world that is notorious for depicting all the good but none of the bad to show that you that none of us are immune to the effects of aging, and to encourage you to take care of yourself as best you can- keep moving, live life, eat healthy, donāt overdo anything, and work with what you have. There are so many dealing with health issues much worse than anything I have going on and I never lose sight of that.
Thanks so much for the wonderful birthday wishes. I look forward to the day Iām back in the water once my neck is healed and though I wonāt be surfing the biggest, heaviest waves, or battling the crowd for the best waves, I will be the one with the biggest smile just grateful that I can once again bask in the natural beauty and healing power that the ocean has given me for the better part of my life!
All the best! Jay
