Literacy doesn’t live in one place.
⠀
It shows up in rhythm. In movement. In the way a poem sounds out loud.
⠀
A drumbeat teaches pattern. Poetry teaches flow and expression. Art teaches observation and interpretation.
⠀
All of it builds the same thing.
Voice. Confidence. The ability to create meaning.
⠀
For many children, this is where it begins.
⠀
Before the sentence is written. Before the page is filled.
They feel it first.
And when they feel it, they engage.

When children can express what they see and feel through art, movement, storytelling, and connection, something opens.
⠀
I recently came across The Storyteller’s Handbook. It’s a stunning book filled with rich illustrations inviting children to tell their own stories.
⠀
No script. No right answer. Just imagination.
⠀
While it’s a beautiful resource, this idea doesn’t live in one book alone.
⠀
Any piece of art can become a story.
A painting. An illustration. A mural in your neighborhood.
⠀
Ask a child what they see. Let them build their own “once upon a time… every day… one day… until…”
⠀
The story grows because they are part of it.
⠀
It’s a reminder literacy is more than words on a page. It’s how children make meaning, find their voice, and connect with the world around them.

I haven’t been posting much lately most of my time and energy is focused on growing Literacy for Kids
Sitting in rooms with Detroit students meeting authors and artists watching them ask questions celebrating the moment something clicks
It’s not just about putting books in their hands it’s about creating access to people who inspire them
Literacy is more than reading it’s connection, confidence, and possibility
This is the work of Literacy for Kids

“Creating fish helps students reconnect with the wonders beneath the ocean surface. “Dinosaurs Living in MY Hair!3” fosters environmental awareness of our oceans and marine life through a rhythmic, poetic beat. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing thousands of fish creations, and I’m constantly inspired by the unique creativity that unfolds each time. Love Eastover Elementary School students, parents and staff - @popofindie rocks.

Where do you find inspiration? I suggested to Carkenord Elementary School students Thursday night, “To sprinkle in pieces of themselves in their writing. Write what you know. Pets, siblings, activities you’re familiar with — then let imagination take flight.”

Author Jayne Rose-Vallee visited second graders at Kerby Elementary. She read her new book Dinosaurs Living in MY Hair!3 and talked to them about ocean conservation.
