Jay Kelly began his career in graphic design but quickly emerged as a notable fine artist with his unique style. His latest work focuses on torn collage elements. Starting with a source image that intrigues him—whether for balance, depth, beauty, or romance—Kelly transforms it into something entirely new.
Sometimes, the source comes from vintage books or magazines, like No Matter Where, inspired by a Balenciaga ad. Other times, it’s his own photography, as in Just Possible, which features a chandelier. Once he selects an image, he experiments with sizing and cropping before recreating it using countless bits of paper.
Kelly’s materials include vintage magazines, novels (both classic and obscure), and art history books. The natural aging of these papers provides shades of whites and tans. He also incorporates black paper stock and hand-dyed papers for additional texture and depth. For vibrant color images, he scans and reprints vintage material with archival ink on fine art paper to preserve their brilliance over time.
His process is meticulous—hand-tearing and gluing each piece to build highlights and shadows. He views the work from across the studio, often squinting to check proportions and shading. As the piece nears completion, the paper fragments become smaller and more precise.
Once finished, the collage is sealed with gel medium and topped with glossy resin or varnish, uniting all the elements into a cohesive artwork. Each piece’s title is derived from text that naturally integrates into the finished piece.
By painting with paper, Kelly achieves a unique depth, offering viewers a photorealistic image from afar and intricate textures up close. Thousands of tiny fragments come together to create something entirely new. For Kelly, art should inspire, transport, and awe. This series embodies that vision.
