PARALLEL II: INTERZONE explores how the U.S. military’s presence in Udon Thani went beyond building bases. These traces shaped the region’s economy and culture, lasting well beyond the Vietnam War. In Udon Thani, such layered memories and cultural complexities blur fixed identities, turning the city into a hybrid space, beyond the control of any single authority.
“Interzone” describes Udon Thani as a place that belongs to no one, shaped by different identities and able to challenge dominant stories. It’s not just the city itself, but also a shifting, psychological landscape beyond time and history.
The key visual of this exhibition draws from a variety of references, including 1970s U.S. army propaganda flyers and the site itself, the Ramasun Historical Museum, which was once a U.S. military base in Udon Thani. The concept further evolves around the theme of “resonance,” highlighting the lingering traces of Udon Thani’s role as an interzone during the Vietnam War.
During the design process, I uncovered many interesting aspects of U.S. influence in Thailand that I had never encountered before. This project allowed me to engage with historical narratives often overlooked by the younger generation and serves as a reminder that the work of “decolonization” remains an important task for us today.
