Back when I was developing The World of Supersaurs, I created a fictional brand called The Sauria Canning Company— a playful nod to the real-life Liebig’s Extract of Meat Company, founded in 1865. You might not recognise the name, but Liebig was responsible for producing the first tinned corned beef under the label Fray Bentos, and later developed the iconic meat extract Oxo in 1911.
In my world, The Sauria Canning Company specialised in a compressed saurian meat product called SPAW — a cheeky blend of dinoSAUR and the famously tinned SPAM. (For the curious: SPAM, the processed pork-and-ham mash-up from Hormel Foods, debuted in the U.S. in 1937.)
SPAW appears throughout all six Supersaurs books, even making it into the Epilogue: “SPAW is still manufactured but now comes with a health warning — and the iconic tins no longer open with winding keys.”
Every now and then a wonderful surprise comes along. Many thanks to @tastesofink Will Conway for reaching out and bringing his graphic novel Steak to my attention with sumptuous artwork by Marc Olivent. Can’t wait for the 3rd instalment to learn more about the time traveling meat industry serving dinosaurs for dinner. Right up my street.
